Timberland Honored for Ecodesign by IDSA and BusinessWeek

The Timberland Company has been awarded a bronze 2007 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) for the Timberland Greenscapes Mountain Sneaker, which is part of the Greenscapes Collection, a line of casual footwear and apparel that uses earth conscious materials and construction methods without sacrificing style or function. The IDEA award, sponsored by The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and BusinessWeek, is given to companies that display superior industrial design and creative solutions in today’s marketplace. The jury awarded 20 Golds, 19 Silvers and 42 Bronzes, for a total of 81 awards. These were selected from nearly 1,691 entries.

The Greenscapes Mountain Sneaker is versatile and sturdy enough for trail use, yet adaptable for a casual, lifestyle environment. Recognizing outdoor consumers’ concerns about social and environmental responsibility, Timberland ensured that the Greenscapes Mountain Sneaker received a Green Index rating, a sustainability rating system that assesses the environmental impact of a product. The shoe also features 100% PET recycled laces and a Vibram EcoStep outsole made of environmentally conscious, 30% recycled rubber.

The IDEA awards aim to generate awareness of the importance of superior industrial design and creative solutions. The intense judging is based on strict criteria, including if the project is ecologically responsible, how the design improves business, if the design is new and unique and if the design solution benefits consumers. Overall, the winning companies’ products need to reflect IDSA’s goal of advancing the quality and positive impact of design.

“We’re proud and honored to be recognized by IDSA and BusinessWeek and receive a very prestigious award,” said Jay Steere, Global Vice President of Product, Timberland Outdoor Performance. “Timberland has always been dedicated to developing products that use more renewable materials, but do not compromise on design or performance; the Greenscapes Mountain Sneaker embodies that commitment."
