Meet Trevor: Trailspace Essay Contest Winner

by Alicia MacLeay
April 19, 2011

Contest winner Trevor Meers with kids he met in the Andes during a Peru trek last summer.

Congratulations, Trevor Meers! Trailspace members were most entertained by your tale of a tent mate you can't forget.

Trevor's essay, I'm Afraid Someone's Going to Eat Steve, won the Trailspace Turns 10 Essay Contest and earned him a $100 gift certificate. Here's a little more about Trevor, in his own words.

Background: I live outside Des Moines, Iowa, with my wife and two daughters at a little country place where we can listen to the coyotes call and catch tadpoles every spring.

Outdoor Adventures: I'm an avid backpacker and trail runner, and I regularly lead church groups on outdoor adventures. In fact, I'm leaving in less than two weeks to lead a canyoneering trip to Utah's Escalante National Monument. (And no, 127 Hours did nothing good for my wife's peace of mind.)

Outdoor Highlights: My favorite recent outdoor highlights include climbing Mt. Rainier and trekking through the Peruvian Andes. (See Trevor's picture at right.)

Congratulations, Trevor! Read Trevor's essay, or share your own tales of unforgettably annoying outdoor partners below.

We also had two runners-up, who earned $25 gift cards.

Second Place: Chace Boswell (zombiehiker) came in second place with his essay The Coomer's Falls Chase. Chace, a freelance writer, lives in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, just minutes from Mount Rogers, Virginia's tallest peak. He and his wife are avid hikers and mountain bikers and have two beautiful daughters (19 months and 8 months old).

Third Place: Tom Sherman came in third with his essay NP Trail. Tom says he spends all of his off time outdoors: biking, kayaking, camping, "though my true passion is hiking, both winter and summer. There are few better feelings in the world than that of being on a summit. Or that of struggling along a desolate trail with everything you need in the world tucked into that piece of fabric that is strapped to your back." When he's not outdoors, Tom earns the money he spends on gear working as a home inspector.

Congratulations to our winners! Here's hoping all of your outdoor adventures are memorable. Thanks to everyone who entered and who voted. All entrants will get Trailspace hats, stickers, and something from the Trailspace box of gear.
