The day's high & low temps ... and, where you live

Thought I'd kick-off a whole 'nuther post-topic related to temperature.

That old thread I had going.  "Too HOT to hike ??" is probably ready for the recycle-bin or the 'cyber-shredder'.

OK!   We're on the cusp of Autumn ( a beautiful word ... "fall" is NOT ).   A week away.

Already, here on Maryland's Eastern Shore, on the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula (between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean) the temps are varying widely.

In the mid-80s earlier today ... going down to the 40s tonight.  55 and holding right now at about 9:50 PM this evening.

As this thread will probably run into Spring ... let's kick it off right and regally!

Post your high and low temps for the day ... and where it is you live.

Here in Pittsburgh the high today was 61, so far we are sitting at 44(10:29pm), I am sure this will drop though. News says 30s.

I keep telling my wife that Fall is coming quick. Personally I love the colder temps but she asked me early in the a.m. if I could fire up the furnace.

Hmmm, we're really grasping for topics here, eh? :).

Anyway, more interesting than the temperatures where we live (and more on topic for the forum :P) might be what the temperatures are like now at some of our favorite wilderness destinations.  For me - the high Sierra - it's in the 70's during the day and 30's at night.... and those nighttime temps are dropping...

Looks like the start of winter is here for us in WA.  At least on the Olympic Peninsula.  A high of 51 with a low of 48.  It has rained the last 7 of 9 days with temps not passing 55 for the last 8-9 days.  We had a max of 5 weeks of summer this year where I live and now were into the rainy season with no end in site.  The apples are crispy and ripe on the trees and the garden is flush with tons of food.  It is said that because of La Nina that we will have the same or a similar winter here in the PNW as last year.  That would be rain for the next 8-9 months.

A perfect 50 degrees, here on the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula, between the Chesapeake and the Atlantic.   9:30 AM.

"Perfect" temps the past couple weeks.   Lows in the mid 40s ... highs in the mid 70s

The dreaded seasonal allergies (ragweed and goldenrod) are rearing their ugly heads.   That will continue until the 1st "killer frost".

I've been 'shakin' down' some gear.   I've found it to be a challenge finding sleeping gear for that 50 - 70 degree temperature range.   I think I'm onto something, though.

Thanks for the 'tip'.   I'll check it out.

Meanwhile, a couple weeks ago, I picked-up something which seems to fit the bill:

The North Face "Mercurial".

Got a great deal on it.

Very versatile.   Can be used six (6) different ways.   Rectangular, with dbl-zipper ... allows use as a bag four ways (for different temps) ... and, as a blankie two different ways.

How's that for versatility ?

Not ready to award the coveted "5-Stars", though.   The zipper is funky.   Doesn't snag ... but, it locks TOO FIRMLY.

It hasn't been reviewed here, yet.   But, there is a description in the Gear Reviews section.  I figured-out how to use to beyond the mfr'ssuggestions.

"Necessity is a mother .... "

Now we are gettin there. High 38F, Low 23F. Snow, heavy at times. Accumulation expected 10-14 inches.

Let it snow! Bring on the winter, woohoo! Just an excuse for me to get out at first light to do some day hiking tomorrow.

Have about 3-4 inches on the ground so far, and its not supposed to stop snowing for another 16 hours or so. If it keeps up we will have 14inches or more.

I am living in Tucson AZ now. Days are around the 70-80s and night around 50-60s. Its nice tho as one can go up into the mountains as I have been and get to where the nights are cooler and the days mild. It get down to 60 in the days in December, but rises to over 100 in the middle of summer. I tried staying here once in 1986 for the summer, made it to mid July before returning to Wyoming.

I have recently noticed that on the flat desert country here around Tucson the air cools off a lot after sundown as compared to being up in the canyons and other rock/sandstone ares of the mountains where even long after sundown the warmth of th suns rays soaked up during the daytime in the rocks/stone radiates out for a long time. In the flat desert where its all sand and desert plants the suns rays reflect 90% back into the sky and have no effect on keeping the country warm. By 3 am its down to 50 in the non-mountain areas as compared to about 70 in the rock/stone mountain areas.

The city especailly downtown where the buildings, paved streets, sidewalks, etc do the same as the rocks in the mtns stay almost to warm after dark. By 7 am in the city the air temps are twice as high as they are in the desert country around it.

Alas today was/is a day of great saddnes.  It is prgjected that we will have a freeze of down to 24 deg which means it will be around 20 here where I live.  Winter has begun here is Seabeck.  If not tonight then tomorrow night.  I had to harvest many of the items in the garden as it will not survive such a hard freeze.

A mess of Collard greens.
DSC05179.jpg
Mogh guards the greens ensuring the sheepies don't come near.

I took an equal amount of Collards, Swiss Chard, and Kale for a total amount of 60 lbs of green matter from the garden along with 10 lbs of apples today.

The high was 40 deg

The low is projected to be 24 +/- deg.

I know that to which you are referring, Artemis.

However; I had been cautioned by locals to be especially wary of changeable conditions in The Badlands. I was prepared for the cold.

BTW -- I hiked in your (Nebraska) Sandhills Wildernes area and State Forest last week. Amazingly beautiful and wondrous.

I was somewhat troubled to find a BIG CAT was shadowing me. I doubled back over my route, lest I got lost, and found fresh tracks besides my earlier footprints in the snow.

Moderate temps in the Sandhills.

Sure do hope the Feds DO NOT run that pipeline through there !

Trondheim, Norway: Temps have been hovering on either side of 0C/32F for the last week (and probably will for the next). Rain and slush in the city, but about 50cm of heavy snow around our house and up in the hills above us. Cycling to and from work has been an extra challenge -- my wife gave up and started taking the bus. The last 2 nights I've been cutting easy turns on backcountry skis on some of the steeper xc trails in the hills above my house, but now the groomers are out so tonight the skinny skis will come back out, and my daughter and I will shoot for 30 km tomorrow. It's great to have the snow, but the warm temps keep it challenging.

Yesterday I was thinking of going out for a two day trip. And yes I do carry a small parafoil with me to fly. Woke up to trees down. and a lake around my Apts. Think I'll just drink out of my growlers. I do have two realy good Ales. And like watching the storm tear apart everything.

Be careful, Mike.

Folks here (back East) have "Hurricane Parties".   They stick around when the evacuation order is made, and "batten-down" with ample booze, to take it all in.

Sometimes, as in 1969, when Hurricane Camille hit the Mississippi coast, there was massive destruction and loss of life.   210 MPH winds, and 24 ft tidal surge.

Today its 10 F and windy as heck and we got 4" of new snow.  Seattle is a disaster but in E Wa people are more used to the white stuff.

I hooked the dog to my climbing harness and stepped into the XC skis last night.  Zoom! Good times.

Didn't catch the temp ... but, it was reported that 2 - 4 inches of snow fell in the Sahara Desert, near Algiers, yesterday.

Hmmm ....

It was also reported that Al Gore was flying there to film camel-jockeys trying to learn how to make a snowman.  [ *insert smilie emoticon* ]

Politically directed comments are verboten, here, I believe (?).

Gore is NO LONGER a politician.

I would love to lambaste him ... but, I am feeling ambiguous.   He is now irrelevant.

BTW it's a comfortable 65 degrees now (7:40 pm) a low of 50 for tonight, a high of 80 and a low of 54 is predicted for tomorrow.

just took a 90 minute walk here in the DC suburbs.  30 degrees, light breeze, and finally, some cold white precipitation that appears ready to carry through tomorrow morning, when it will probably turn to ice/freezing rain.  my kind of weather.  my son has an outdoor soccer game at 11 tomorrow morning, and i guarantee i will be the only parent standing out in the freezing rain (in gtx shoes, layers and eVent pants and jacket, naturally) to see it.  :)

I would hope some people remember a handy device, known as an umbrella.

Some might call it a "bumbershoot".

I have several; keep one in each vehicle and use one when hiking with rain in the forecast.   Even though I acquired this particular one from an 'outdoor store' (Hudson Trail Outfitters, in Annapolis) ... it is NOT sturdy enough, in my opinion, for on-trail use where there is a bit of overhang (usually, soft conifers) ... nor, for stiff winds.

Easton, MD -- 21601

Awakened to 32 degrees, and had to scrape the windshield of my beloved VW Vanagon, as there was a thin coating of ice.

When I parked it last night, it had become foggy ... an unusual 'chrystalline' sorta fog, with it hanging in the air.

This was something that occurs here:  frozen fog.

My Vanagon was coated with it this AM.   Horrific condition in which to drive.

Spent last week skiing in 0 to -4F temps, breezes up to 40 knots, according to the official met station. My idea of fun!

And the drive home featured about 300 miles of 4WD at 40 mph average, including a fair amount of whiteout with large fluffy white hexagonal crystals. The following image was taken as we entered the restricted visibility area -

Uncharacteristic high of 61-degrees (F), here in Easton, MD ... on the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula, between the Chesapeake and the Atlantic.

Usually a 3rd-week in January, "January Thaw" (in the "Farmer's Almanac") around these parts.   BUT, nothing to "thaw", as it has been fairly mild here most of this Winter.

29 degrees (F) at 7:AM, Easton, Maryland ... near the Chesapeake Bay, and with the Atlantic Ocean about an hour's drive to the East.

55-degrees, here in my apartment.   I never have heat on overnights.   Have seen it down to about 40-degrees (in apt).   Being single has its rewards.   Very low utility-bills.   Also, living in cool temps (indoors) conditions one to tolerating very cold temps outdoors.   I frequently wear insulated mid-layer clothing, indoors.  But, generally, almost always a wool sweater.   (Love that wool!).   I get very good use out of my acquisitions.

This is the time of year when temperatures vary quite a bit.   Also; winds are a factor.  The hackneyed expression, "wind-chill" takes on real meaning.

A few days ago, it was in the mid-60's.  Two days ago, the high was 40 degrees, with very strong winds, gusting to around 50 mph.    I was crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, driving my trusty VW diesel Vanagon ... white-knuckles ... and holding onto the steering-wheel tightly, as wind-gusts atop the bridge were blowing the slab-sided VW Bus 1/2-lane to each side every minute-or-so.

As some of you may know, this part of the country is subject to pretty fierce winds.  Especially, November, February and March.   Sailing on the Chesapeake can be extremely "challenging", to say-the-least.   I once "pitch-poled" a Hobie-Cat on a day with high winds.   If you don't know what "pitch-poled" is, try Google-ing the term.

... And, so it goes ....

Another warm and mild day ....

49-degrees (F) at 6:AM (EDST), here in Talbot County, Maryland ... near the Chesapeake Bay.

Forecast for a high of 70-degrees.

Already seeing some cherry trees blossoming (pink)  ... and a lot of white blossoms on the Bradford Pear trees.

I reckon Spring is here; BUT, Spring is notorious for variable weather conditions.   Breezy here, along the Chesapeake Bay.   Sailing weather ... but, water temps still colder.

29 deg for the low and so far it's 31 deg for the high at 10:30 AM.  6 inches of snow the last two days and woke up to 6 inches of new snow on the ground and it's still coming down.  It's a light snow with large flakes so it's deceptive and builds up fast.  I live in Seabeck WA and my zip is 98380 and I'm between 500-700 feet above sea level.

A very mild 68 degrees (F) on the Patuxent River, near Solomon's Island, Maryland.

Mostly cloudy, 70% humidity, light breeze (5 knots) out of the SW.     Not quite enough to warrant going sailing here on the Chesapeake Bay.

Heavy thunderstorms with lightning last night.   Went on for several hours.

We here, along the Chesapeake, have learned it best to unplug electronic gear (computers, routers, etc.) when these storms roll through.   Somehow, the surge-protectors are not always reliable.
