Seam Sealing New Boots?
Hello,
I just purchased a new pair of boots (Montrail Torre GTX), and according to the bit of card that came with it, they encouraged to use seam sealer on it.
I've never used any of this stuff, but people who have say it'll make my boots look like they've been puked on, and discourage me from doing so. =(
Would like to know how I can do this neatly and without creating an awful mess on my new boots. =P

I imagine they mean waterproofing them. In that case, I use SnoSeal. Will they make your boots looks bad? No, IMHO, different, yes. After a couple of hikes, they will look worn anyway, and you may find that SnoSeal actually makes them look better. I wouldn't worry too much how they look - focus on theit function - to keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable. - SherpaKroto

Seam sealing can look fine if you carefully apply it. The best way is to run seam sealer (Aqua Seal is one good type) into a disposable plastic syringe (about a dollar at the hardware store) and get the sealer right on the threads. It will hardly be visible after the shine has worn off. I have done it on several pairs of boots and it definitely keeps the seams from tearing out. The more seams your boot has, the more useful it will be.
Who cares what the boots look like? Function and fit are everything...

Re: Seam Sealing New Boots?
Thanks for the tip. I've never used any seam sealer before so I decided to try this on the inside of my jacket and tent before I started on the boots. You wouldn't beleive the mess I made of the entire place *grin*
Can't seem to get a hang of using the syringe. =P
I have since decided to use masking tape (to cover up parts I don't want the sealer to get onto) and a brush to apply them to my boots. Will be doing this when they're dry. Will let everyone know how it turns out. =P
