Ruby Mtns

Stay away from the Ruby Mtns. You will be too lonely. When you get lost, no one will be there to help. Especially in the winter, when the only people there are wild telemarkers, and you definitely don't want to associate with pinheads who preach "free the heel and free the soul" and say things like "randonee is French for can't telemark". (I will be doing a bit of tele in the Rubies this winter and want to keep the crowds down, so I recommend everyone else stay away - except Brian in SLC, SherpaJeff, BenSasquatch, and a few others)

Also stay away from Great Basin park. Hmm, actually, there is some truth to this one. There are a lot of designated 4WD trails there, so a lot of 4WD, trail bikes, mountain bikes.

There are a couple good books on Nevada backcountry hikes, titles like Hiking Nevada, Hiking the Great Basin, etc. If you can't find them in a local bookstore, check Adventurous Traveller (www.adventuroustraveller.com). I have found the people who answer the phone pretty knowledgable and helpful.

If you are in southern NV, the northern mtns are farther away than feasible for a day hike. Great Basin, maybe. Consider also going over into southern UT and northern AZ. In winter, some of the hills around Death Valley are pretty reasonable. Telescope is reasonable spring and fall.

No bother. Just keep it a secret. We don't want the crowds to get too big. If people found out that places like the Rubies are true jewels, they would soon get overcrowded. I will be in the Rubies about a week from now myself. Arc Dome Wilderness in Toiyabe NF is a bit closer to you and worth looking at, as is the Boundary Peak area in the White Mtns. Presumably you've already hiked the Mt Charleston area.

Michael White's book, Nevada Wilderness Areas and Great Basin National Park, is a really good place to start for hiking and backpacking areas.

Once you are past Liberty Pass the world becomes yours. Lost is the soul who knows not the site of solitude or the feel of oneness or the Mountain and I. The Wild flowers are best when the heedless throng do not tread on them. Yes I am from Northern Nevada.
