I have had my PreCip for a couple years and have used it for some backpacking, some BC skiing, and some climbing. A friend and his family did the Muir Trail last summer, all using PreCip jackets and pants. So, I would say, yes, it is durable enough.
Now for the shortcomings - Like all the waterproof/breathable jackets, it is more waterproof than breathable. The pit zips help some, and I have found it to work better for wearing in a downpour while hiking than any of my Goretex 2-layer or 3-layer jackets (I have had several Gtx jackets over the past 25 or so years, including a generation 1 version. The PreCip does very well at keeping the rain out, but also does well at keeping your sweat in, so you may be just as wet in warm humid rain as if you had no jacket at all. I don't know about the more northern parts of Norway, but when my wife and I were in southern Norway and Sweden, we found that it could get very humid during the inevitable rains, while being quite warm (at least warm when moving continuously for several hours). This is true of every wp/b I have personally used, as well as a number of other brands and versions that people on hikes and climbs with me have had. The secret of keeping your clothing dry is plenty of ventilation (use the pit zips, torso vents, and front zipper) and not overdressing in the first place. One thing that helps as well is to use wicking synthetics, like Coolmax T-shirts or fleece for warm layers, and always start your hiking day a bit on the cool side when standing around waiting to start. You will warm up soon enough, and you don't want to get hot and sweaty while you have to have your waterproof outer layer on. Ponchos do an excellent job of keeping you dry and non-sweaty, except when the wind is blowing, which causes the poncho to fly up and flap, letting the rain in.

I have the Marmot precip jacket and pants. Like Bill stated, they aren't extremely breathable and you will get condensation on the inside, regardless of the weather- if your active and sweating, there's a moisture issue. I found I have been able to control it well. The pit zips are very large and ventilate well. The best feature of the pants and jacket are the light, light weight and small packsize. As far as durability, they are rather thin, but I don't think carrying a large pack will effect the material, just be careful of snags, etc when off trail.
