I am definitely considering the bivy route, and after talking to people and on this forum, I don't think I need a waterproof one. I think a water-repellant will suffice. I am looking at an OR sleeping bag cover - not a real bivy I know, but will suit my needs. Any comments on this one or others I should look at?

I've had my eye on a bivy made by OWare (http://owareusa.com/bivys.html). I don't know much about the company or this particular product, but a 10 oz. bivy with a silcoat floor and an Epic top is pretty appealing. Epic certainly has a good reputation for breathability and water resistance.

Epic, huge, breathes well, packs small, weighs an astonishing 8oz (as much as an emergency space blanket type tube shelter). I have, I like, I'd recommend.

I found a good deal on this bivy yesterday, and grabbed it because it was the last one, it fit my bag nicely, and I think its what I am looking for. Hopefully it works well next weekend, otherwise I might have a bivy for sale!

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. I'll let you all know if I get hooked on winter camping!

Oware Epic Bivy

I own the Oware Epic bag cover and am quite pleased with it. It employs a removable bug screen as well. A friend of mine also owns it as well as the Bibler Winter Epic. He likes the larger dimensions of the Oware. I also own an Oware silnylon tarp which I like. They make good quality gear. - John
