Yellowstone Backpacking

While all areas are probably just great, can anyone recommend some backpacking destinations within Yellowstone NP. A moderate (whatever that means) hike for a solo experienced hiker is desired. Fishing &/or photography would be my trip goals besides just being there.

Your reasons for your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Yellowstone Backpacking

Check out the Bechler River Trail. There was just a great write-up on it in Backpacker magazine (check their
website??) Goes from Old Faithful to the southwest section of the park. Tons of backcountry. Bear country, so travel wisely. Need a permit (www.nps.gov/yell) I've done part of this trail as a day hike (a LONG day)--it's beautiful!! Have fun!

Re: Yellowstone Backpacking

I have backpacked Yellowstone about 17 times. My trips tend to be moderate and short (6 - 10 miles). I like to stay 3 nights in one place and fish. The best place I have been to for pictures is Slough Creek. But it is very hard to get a permit to camp there. The fishing is not so good anymore as many people come up with guides just for the day since fishing on the Yellowstone river has diminished. There are lots of fish there, just smart ones. They just lay there and tease you. I have done a couple of solo trips but would not recomend it. My trip this summer was an eye opener. My knees gave out on a steep trail and I was not sure I would make it out. I was glad to be with 2 other old guys. I am almost 59 so my days doing this are numbered. I always carry bear spray. 2 years ago we were fishing and came within 100 yards of a giant charoal colored grizzly (they do get that color). It didn't see us and my bear spray was in the tent. ( always carry it with you ). The experience made us feel very small.

Anyway, Yellowstone is 2,000,000 + acres of picture opportunity. The solitude of the backcountry at night is beyon compare. The campsites are normally spaced quite far apart so you can feel alone. But believe me, if you solo, you will feel very alone on a dark night.
