This charger was a gift and at 71 years old I'm not doing much hiking anymore. It can be used to charge things like the STERIPEN water purifier, Cell Phones, Ipod, Blackberry, Garmin, etc. My suggestion would be to use VELCRO to stick it on the top of your backpack and let it charge all day as you walk.
