Tipping your guide

An Awkward question here but next week I'm doing a private half day of training with a rock climbing guide. I have learned it is customary to tip the guide, what is an appropriate amount?

Any other etiquette I should know?

Hi Dale,

People that work in the outdoors in recreation really appreciate some tips of any size.  I have worked packing elk hunters a few times and the tips make a difference.  My Dad has taken me and my brothers on a couple of guided hunts.  People talk about 5-10% as a guideline.  I think any amount you are comfortable with is the right amount.

Going to Poetry this year?

I generally use %15 (or roughly the same as what I would tip at a restaurant as a guideline). The actual amount can vary (obviously) dependant on service, level of enjoyment, attention to detail, etc.

10 - 20% is the nominal range.  I would go to the upper end on a half day charter, however, especially if they provided an enjoyable event.  The guide may only be with you for half a day, but you probably will be the only commission they get that day, yet they still have full time life expenses to cover...

For day trips the rate should be higher.

It was a great day and was well worth the price. I have been trying to get back up with the same instructor but schedules have not been able to mesh and the weather has held us up.
