A school asked me if I could help them build a climbing wall in their gym. I promised to help with funding and labor but beyond that I don't know much about climbing wall construction, just using them. I have seen online articles but nothing that seems like it was written by someone who has done more than a basement bouldering wall. We have some experienced contractors among our parents so I think we could make it happen but, is there anything about building a climbing wall that differs from any other construction project? I am especially looking for experiences and tips from those who have built climbing walls.

Try a search on the mountainproject.com forums, I have seen multiple topics regarding your question, and the folks there would be kind enough to help you out!

If it is a school, then certain rules come into play. Contact the ACCT (Assosciation for Challenge Course Technology) for information on those rules and for certified contractors. Commercial climbing gyms also have a professional association that can help, but ACCT does the standards.
And, yes, there is a lot "special" about climbing walls, if it will be a commercial or "public access" wall (most specially schools!).
