not sure if this is the right place to report this, but I got an email today from someone claiming to get my info from trailspace.

This person wanted a "long term relationship"

While I'm flattered, I don't want these spam mailings...

here is the address

what is also concerning to me is that I have my privacy settings set so that trailspace users can not see my real name or email address, yet somehow this person sent a message to my email anyway.

Maybe you should email her and ask if she is a good cook on the trail. If so, she is a keeper-LOL

Well that's not good. If you've set your email address to be private, only site admins (e.g. me and Alicia) should be able to see it. Even for members who elect to share their addresses, we do have controls in place that are intended to keep that information out of the hands of would-be spammers. So this is a little disturbing; I will be investigating.

Could you please send me a private message or email containing the spam you received (including headers, if possible)?

If anyone else reading this has received similar spam referencing Trailspace, could you please do the same?

I feel left out. Only thing I have is an offer for cialis/viagra for $1 a pill, and a Canadian online Pharmacy Sale... :(

After a bit of sleuthing, I think we've gotten to the bottom of this. It's likely that the spammers got iClimb's email address from a public forum post in which he mentioned his address.

Now that we have the private message system, hopefully this won't be much of a problem going forward. However, there are probably many other old threads where people have posted their email addresses.

If any of you received similar spam mentioning Trailspace, or if you have posted your address in the past and would like it removed, please let me know by PM or email.

We're under attack! by spammers at least: I haven't gotten any of the dreaded emails mentioned above, but there is an impressive spate of spam posts in the Backcountry forum this morning.

Oout of curiousity, how many spam members do you have to block each week? I'm guessing theres a whole bushel of them you've nixed before we ever see them :)

Thanks, Gonzan.

It seems to come in waves. We automatically cut off maybe 10 different spammers a day, and the moderators catch most whatever gets through the filters. However, you and Rick have been beating us to it quite a bit lately. Thanks for your vigilance!

Sure thing, I figure you most likely want a heads up, but if the whistle blowing is annoying just let me know :)

@Dave- They must have an idea that you all(staff) are dealing with the OR show and they have an opportunity to do their damage.

I don't want to see the garbage on here. Its a great site, I am here honestly more than anywhere else I usually frequent. I have pretty much claimed this as my home when I am on the PC. I love to learn as much as I can and I love gear.... and I guess the people are ok too. ;)

I sure don't want to see it get tarnished by anyone trying to sell me knock-off Rolex watches. :) If I catch em I have no problem letting ya know. I feel the same way as Gonzan though. I kinda feel like I am annoying at times when it comes to the whole whistle blowing.

I have been on Twitter quite a bit following the OR show and all the info I can get from there.

Gonzan and Rick: Spam is annoying. You guys acting as early-warning radar is awesome. Thank you!

Trout: I've banned her. Luckily (well, not for you) you're the only person she(?) appears to have spammed here.

As the Number One poster (according to the "People" list), I have the "honor" of receiving lots of PMs seeking communications and closer relationships. The latest (today) is from Tarina, whose "real name" (on her profile) is Sirfhina (apparently in the Phillipines, or at least the email address is yahoo.com.ph) - Phillipines, eh? Her main activities include ice climbing???

Dave says I get so many of these PMs because I have posted so many times for so many years, and thus appear at the top of the number of posts default sort in "People". I haven't noticed any emails coming from Trailspace, though I don't list my email addresses (including my Tsp address). Then again, I usually just dump all the Spam folder without opening anything (after a quick scan of "From" and "Subject", since my spam filters sometimes put something real over there). I do get a lot of spam with topic lines like "15 hot girls", "regain your youthful vigor", and the occasional "money awaits you in Nigeria".

Oh, for Dave, "Tarina" just joined today. So you can ban "her".

WOW Rick....your really gonna be a millionaire? How lucky!

Please don't forget about us little guys, your dear friends here at Trailspace many whom are in desperate need of new gear.

Remember....save a hiker, save a trail. It's a worthy cause.

On a more serious note, I haven't had any spam in several days and although I expect some will slip through the cracks, I applaud Dave & Alicia & staff for a wonderful website with some great new features.

Thanks guys!

Ya, my wife jokes that she is willing to sell me to one of them...at least I think she is joking...

Hi OGBO I had a neighbor here in Germany that bought his wife from the Phillipines, so I am quite sure the email was something along those lines. I heard horror stories that some people buy there wives from the Island after seeing the picture, but the person stepping off the plane is actually the mother. I guess it serves them right for buying people. Seems to be a normal practice that is spreading. Russia and other Eastern countries have been in the business. I am quite sure it is one of these companies making money off of desperate people. This is human trafficing of course.

No problem TH, I will be more than happy to help out. I recieved confirmation that my money was on its way but there was s ome red tape that needed to be handled before it would get to me. No worries though. I will have it by mid next week.

Kinda funny, I spoke to 6 different gentlemen on the phone. They sound so similar... I know they were different people, they all had different names. Yes they all had the same phone number but that is the main to their call center. They gave it to me because I am such an important person them. Talk about appreciation. :)

Hmm strange.  I get similar emails too, except they claim to be a debt collection agency located inAbuja, alleging I owe a large sum of money to some guy in Pennsylvania going by the name of Rick.  Regardless I have no recollection of such an obligation, they are willing to help resolve this matter, loaning me $17K that I am to use to secure a $12.7M loan to retire this debt.  I need only send them $2K to signify my good will intention to make good on my obligation.

Ed

Yes, a lot of us got the Maka spam PMs. That was our first big round of private message spam. We've since put countermeasures in place to prevent similar mass-messaging attacks.
