Your pack size is determined by the size of your gearload. If for example, you have a synthetyic fill sleeping bag you will need a larger pack to hold it. You will have to figure out what gear you are going to use then get a pack that can hold all of it. I'd say on average thru-hikers have a pack in the 4000 Ci range. On trail runners
I have heard many good things about all of the major brands. Montrain merrel lowa etc. Also many people like just plain New Balace running shoes. What is realy important is that the fit your feet!
