I'm currently running an "equipment necessity check" and thought I would sound out the forum members. I've always had a high metabolism (borderline diabetic) and my appetite when hiking is voracious. I typically wake up in the middle of the night having to eat (when this happens, it is not optional).

I used to eat inside my tent regardless of weather. But now that the bear population in the local California mountains is so much greater these days (yes, bear attacks in the area are up) I put a new regimen in place the last few years. It's typical to rules for most other places: separate camp kitchen, 100 yds away minimum, absolutely no food or smell of food on tent, hands, clothes, etc. But one night I woke up - as usual - and at 8500 feet in high winds, I'm off to the camp kitchen to cook up some beef stew on the flameless stove (those things are handy).

Sooooo, I'm looking to pick up a siltarp or equivalent in order to build a decent shelter for the camp kitchen. I'm wondering if anyone has used the ID Silshelter or Silwing? I get the impression that the basic square siltarps may be a bit fiddly in a breeze. I don't want to have to get up more than necessary to mess with anything in high winds (common around here), so I would prefer something that can be anchored and left for the night - 100 yards away - without having to listen to it slowly come undone!! :)

Suggestions welcome as usual.
