What's up with synthetic cold weather sleeping bags?
I've been browsing the gear reviews for information on synthetic cold weather sleeping bags. It's kinda strange that all of the highly rated bags are no longer being sold (at least most of the ones I looked at do not list a specific retailer). The only ones that list prices and retailers are around 3 stars or less. What gives?
Is down so much better than the synths that they just quit making them? Too heavy? I have been eyeing a Nebo Sports Wolverine, but can't find much on them anywhere. Seems they have gone south. It's a cheap bag, but seems to fit my budget (big plus here) and is a little heavier than most. The only real distributor of Nebo is Moosineer(sp?) and there is no real web site for Nebo anymore. The TNF Dark Star 3D appeals to me also, and it is still listed by TNF, but beyond that, pretty much nothing. The non-3D version didn't get much in the way of favorable reviews, so not sure if that is a warning sign or not.
I sort of like the synthetic benefit of warmth when wet, and for the most part, that's why I am leaning that way. Anyone care to comment on any of the above or convince me my way of thinking is totally wrong?
Thanks

Blackbeard,
EMS, REI and others still seem to have synthetic cold weather bags - in my experience (limited as, being a ludite and a cheap SOB in the bargain, I tend to use equipment until it's all worn out, so I haven't replaced a sleeping bag in quite some time) "budget" and "ratings" are seldom in alignment. It seems that most "ratings" (like in Backpacker, Outside and other magazines) show the more expensive products in a more favorable light -
Hit a couple shops - lay the bags on the floor - measure the loft - climb in - see how they fit - cram 'em into stuff sacks - see how they compress - then you can figure out what's most important to you (rather than to the editor, gear tester or guy selling advertising space) and get the cold weather bag you really want -
I'm interested in what you come up with - as my current ancient winter bag is on its last legs - it just ain't as warm as it used to be (seems smaller in diameter - perhaps I've just expanded to fill the available space!) -

SteveTF,
Yes, I've always expressed my disappointment with reviews. It just seems, though, that no one in our Gear Reviews wants to review synth cold bags, and this is supposed to be from users, not retailers. I just assumed, being the rookie that I am, that synth bags are a no-no and down a yes-yes, and hence, the lack of reviews. Or lack of people making them.
Thanks loads.

I've heard a lot of fuss between synthetic and down. I live in interior Alaska and use a TNF Dark Star. I got it ignoring any sway between synthetic and down and don't regret my purchase. Simply, at the time, it was the lowest temp rating versus dollar; more bang for my buck.
I've heard the argument that there is no moisture at temps low enough to use down and therefore waterproofness is not a factor. I have to say that I still sweat... I believe synthetic to be dominant. Either way, the Dark Star hasn't let me down.
If you can get to a store, climb in the bags first and try them out. In fact, ask for a discount; you never know... Out of all my trips, I have been so thankful for a nice tent and sleeping bag; don't skimp on quality. I'd say, prioritize your reasons for buying a bag, do your research, and you won't regret it later.

Re: What's up with synthetic cold weather sleeping bags?
Hey,
The website for Nebo is http://www.alliancesportsgroup.net. I actually bought a Nebo Sports Fox 75+10 pack as it is about the only pack that fit into my budget at the time, and I wanted to replace my old worn out external frame. I don't know about their sleeping bags, but I am really impressed with the quality of the pack for the price. It is very comfortable and rides quite well. My only complaint is that the thing weighs about 6 pounds. When I use that pack I'm already 20% to the weight I wanna keep under (30), and I don't need an 85 liter pack. Once the spring semester starts though, I get excess financial aid, and I'm getting the pack I've been eyeing for a while now... the Osprey Aether 70 *drools*. Anywho, I got a little off subject, and apologize for it. The bottom line is, I have a Nebo Sports product, and have been quite satisfied with it. It's a great value at the price. Just goes to show you that ratings aren't always the best indicator for a product, just a starting point for you to compare and contrast items you might be interested in. Okay I'm done.
