I am looking to replace a trusty external frame three zippered compartment pack.
All the new packs have a duffel style top loading opening with a very small compartment directly underneath and a place to strap on gear at the bottom. I have used these types and find I am always digging for stuff in the top compartment because it is too deep The lower compartment, always seems to be too small, even though they are designed with u-shaped zippered openings. And what the heck do you do with all that drawstring mess? Am I the only one who despises this design?!
The original pack was an inexpensive Wenzel, three compartment with six side pockets. It has worked so well over the years to keep gear organized and accessible for quick on-the-trail access that I hate the thought of this pack wearing out. I get the heebie-geebies just thinking about it.
Most of our hiking is in the desert and I have found that an external frame keeps you much cooler. I don't need anything fancy with rain flaps etc.; just three compartments and side pockets that are just deep enough to hold water bottles...yes, I am the only one who doesn't drink from a camelbak sippy...again, not too accessible if you are carrying water that others are drinking.
By now you probably think I am being anal.
Nope. Just been on the trail when what you need is way down in the bottom of that stylish $150.00 pack! (Get rid of that piece of gosa!)
Geez. Am I going to have to custom make one for the original frame???
Anyone out there can help, I'd love it.
Annie
