Osprey Aether 70 vs Crescent 85?

Osprey Aether 70 vs Crescent 85?

One of these is coming home with me, I just don't know which one it is yet

A local store has them both in stock, for the same price. They both fit me alright and both have what I want. Problem is though, I'm leaning towards the Crescent as it just feels a tad better and is built stronger. It just bugs me that the Crescent has been discontinued and that leaves me wondering. The Aether is so light though and I'm concerned about it's overall strength.

This pack will be used for long hauls and will be getting a workout.

So...what do you think? Which one would you pick?

Help

Don't worry about the "discontinued". Companies do that with perfectly good designs of gear. It's a sales tactic - the new version has a new name that helps shout "NEW! IMPROVED!" when the reality is that the changes are minor. I forget right now what the replacement for the Crescent is called, but my recollection from the OR Show last month is that it is very similar with some minor "improvements" and cosmetic changes (new colors, too! wow!)

I have an Aether 60, which is what went up Kilimanjaro with me and I use for weekend backpacks plus getting climbing gear to the foot of climbs. The Aethers are plenty rugged. But I like the color of mine better than next season's colors for the Aether (as if color makes a difference in comfort, utility, or anything else).

The numbers for Osprey packs are the nominal capacity in liters - 60 = 60 liters; 70 = 70 liters; 85 = 85 liters. So the Crescent 85 is 15 liters bigger than the Aether 70, something like 5000 cu in vs 4000 cu in

Just so you don't have buyer's remorse: I've hiked the last two seasons at least 300 miles in the Rockies with my Crescent 85 and have had no problems. I even purchased a small osprey day pack that fastens via the d-links to give myself added flexibility.

I'm looking now for a larger pack. Myster Ranch g6000 or g7000 because I want to bring more gear in a tidier way.

Good luck
