All around tent

I am currently seeking an all around tent for my summer pursuits; canoeing, car camping, and backpacking. I currently have an EMS Simoom tent, however it has succumb to mildew and EMS has no recommendations for replacement as they have discontinued the tent. I have since looked into Moss tents but they are hard to come by, therefore it leaves me with a choice of Hilleberg or Black Diamond. I am basically looking for something that is a good all around tent that will stand the test of time like my Simoom. I would love expert opinion/suggestion as to what tent would be a good replacement.

Re: All around tent

The short answer is "ain't no such thing!" The criteria for those 3 activities are, for most participants in each, very different. Backpacking is probably the most limiting - light weight, packs small, easy to set up vs car camping - lots of room, can stand up in it, weight and size of no importance, vs canoeing - a backpacking tent will do, but weight and size are not very important, and it would be nice to have more room than most tolerate for backpacking plus a heavier duty floor to stand up to the kinds of surfaces one encounters setting up during extended canoe trips (often sandy or rocky, which is harder on tent floors).

If it were me, I would stick with the backpacking criteria and just be satisfied with the tent in other uses. Sure, it's nice to be able to stand up in the tent, but that means too heavy and too bulky for backpacking (and maybe even for canoeing). I use a 3-season backpacking tent for almost all my camping, whether backpacking, bike camping, or car camping. Winter camping and extended expeditions call for a full-on, purpose designed expedition tent, for which 3-season tents just don't hack it.

Thanks for the input. Keeping the backpacking tent in mind do you have any recommendations for said tent for 3 people?

You said you were looking at Hilleberg and BD. Both make fairly light 3-person tents. I would choose Hilleberg first, although the BD Megamid and superlight version of the Megamid are under 3 pounds for 4 people's worth of space (add some weight for the mosquito netting liner if you need it, plus you need some sort of ground cloth or the tub floor) The Megamid is what some people call a tarp tent. I actually prefer Integral Designs' version of the same thing.

I have been pondering the Nemo Losi 3 as an option. If anyone has experience with Nemo or the tent I would appreciate any input.

Don't laugh, but I own three Sierra Designs tents. A 2007 Electron 2-man (motorcycle camping, a 1988 Base Camp 4-man (car camping) and a 2007 6-man Bedouin 4 (after 20 years I deserved a new tent and the kids sleep in the Base Camp. They are technical in features, high in quality, and best of all: You can buy them new-in-box off ebay for 50 - 60% off in auctions. I like Marmot tents better, but they're just not worth the extra money IMHO.

Re: All around tent

Moss made great tents, but, according to its website, in the mid 1990's Bill Moss sold the camping tent business (to MSR). I always wanted a Moss Olympic, but never got one. He now designs and makes custom fabric displays for trade shows and such.

Not sure why you consider Hilleberg or BD your only choices-there are a lot of tent makers out there, including some "cottage industry" companies like TarpTent that make well respected lightweight tents.

Re: All around tent

Moss certainly was a great company with a great product...all things said my whole intention with this thread was to find out what is available to me with regards to tent manufacturers that run along the same lines as Moss. My needs are rather basic...a 3 person tent that is not susceptible to condensation problems that can be used for a variety of activities and will stand the test of time. I realize in the realm of tents no one tent will serve all of these needs, however I am essentially looking for individual input on what products are available that can meet one or more of my criteria.
