Strongest long-handled TI spoon?
Who makes the strongest long-handled titanium spoon/spork? I'd like to use it as both an eating utensil and a cat-hole digger. I've been to REI and tested both the REI model and the snow peak, with both of them not seeming strong enough for this kind of use. The way I figure, the spoon only has to dig the hole, not fill it back in, so there should be no problems also purposing it as a eating tool. Should I try to source some scrap aerospace sheet titanium and make one myself?--All the ones I've seen don't seem to have the strength...

Hi there,
The sea to summit ipood, sounds exactly what you're looking for!

Re: Strongest long-handled TI spoon?
Yeah, I just returned the STS ipood, actually. I'm looking to cut some weight, and a separate trowel in addition to a big spoon seems redundant to me. Besides, the ipood jams up any time you get even the smallest particulates between the handle and the shovel part of it, which is every time you use the thing. It's a design flaw in my eyes, seeing as how one usually uses a shovel to move dirt (soil, for all my soil scientists).

pillowthread,
I understand your desire to cut gear and weight, be multi purpose etc. But I think you run a greater risk of cross contamination, even being careful. Would it be possible to dig with a stick, light soup can, sharp rock, or ideally anything you don't have to pack?

That's the plan, trouthunter. I'm looking for a tool to help me out in those areas where said "found" tools are not readily available. And as for cross-contamination, I've been carefully improving my immune system for a few years now, using methods not used by many in the US. Think 3rd world country type stuff.
I should say here that I only employ these techniques when on solo trips; in group situations I use as much sanitizer and Dr. Broners as needed to not bring attention to my sanitary practices. No need to put others at risk.

Thanks for the suggestions, Mike068, but I've seen all those already and I'm looking for something different, like a spoon.

Ti gets very hot. I recommend a long handled Lexan spoon. Check REI.

Mike068, the Wal Mart stores in my area carry the exact same trowel as the U-Dig-It but under their brand name. The dimesions are the same, as is the weight. The cost is considerably lower though, $3.95. I have 3 of them, they work great.

I think for multi-purpose gear you're looking in the wrong place. No one makes a lightweight camping spoon that's also strong enough to dig with... think about it. That wouldn't make any sense. You'd have the strongest, beefiest, HEAVIEST spoon around.
Perhaps you need to check out some other part of your kit for digging. Do you carry stakes for a tent or shelter of some kind? Could you bundle them and use them to scrape a hole instead of scooping like a shovel would?
