Choosing a DSLR

I am perplexed. We have been using a canon point and shoot 7.1 MGPXL. It has served us well but it is time for an upgrade.
I am looking at both the D40 and D80.

Can anyone convince me to spend the extra money on the D80?

why......why not?

We plan on taking this everywhere we go....including the backcountry.
