Re: dutch ovens
Hi doggus,
Yes I do! I mostly cook chili and stews for now. As far as recipes I just kinda wing it, little of this, little of that.
I haven't done it yet but I want to try boiling some Blue Crab, I can crab for free down here on the coast. Throw them straight in the pot.

Re: dutch ovens
Barb and I teach dutch oven cooking to Boy Scouts and demonstrate it during mountain man re-enactments. You can cook almost anything with a dutch oven that you can cook on a fancy kitchen stove, from pancakes and omelettes in the morning to stews (ragout, if you want the fancy name), baked chicken, minestrone, tortilla soup, and mole poblano to pies and cakes for dessert. If you have the full range of sizes, you can boil lobster, too.
And yes, you can do this for your gourmet meals when car camping, too.
Dutch ovens are called that because the Dutch traders in Nieuw Amsterdam used them for trade goods to the Native Americans. Like the Canadians used Hudson's Bay blankets (except that real Hudson's Bay blankets were marked with the trade value in beaver skins by the number of hash marks on the hem of the blanket - higher quality signified by more hash marks - Dutch ovens weren't marked for trade value).
Oh, beware when buying used dutch ovens at flea markets - self-loaders and others who melt lead often use dutch ovens for melting the lead. The lead gets into the pores of the iron, and will literally poison you if you later cook food in them. It is best to buy a new oven, unless you really know the history of the pot.

Re: dutch ovens
Sometimes it's our job in life to help along those who have fallen behind, sometimes it's our job to listen and learn. Forums are like that too I guess.
It's good we can meet on the battlefield of life and discuss dutch ovens. (reference to Clint Eastwood movie)
I wish I was a little more skilled with dutch ovens, but then again I enjoy learning, so I have a lot to look forward to. I have two of them and sometimes I even use them at home just for fun.
