Cape Lookout paddle/camping

Some friends and I are planning to canoe to Cape Lookout from Harker's Island around the middle of December. If anybody has any recommendations or pointers for beach camping, I'd love to hear them. More importantly, if somebody knows how the tide affects the current in that area, I could definitely use some advice here.
