Probably South Lake trailhead. The closest town is Bishop on US 395 about 39 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes, 15 miles north of Big Pine. From Bishop drive 15 miles west on CA 168 (West Line Street) to the South Lake Road Junction. Turn left and drive 7 miles to the Bishop Pass trailhead and parking. Overnight parking is in the upper lot.

North Lake trailhead and over Puite Pass would be another option.

Driving into Florence Lake is a bit more difficult about 14 miles along a dirt road. Do not drive it at night. I think a North to South Lake, or South to North, loop is popular:

The shortest approach by trail is from Florence Lake. The next shortest is via North Lake/Piute Pass.

Evolution Valley

Evolution Lake

The North Lake - South Lake loop makes a great trip.
