Occasionally I have to travel to Butte for work. When this happens I try to do something after work to make the trip somewhat interesting.
So I contacted my TS friend Cleric for some local beta on an after work hike.
He recommended Maude S Canyon, just outside town:

A couple miles of uphill led me to a great view of the valley

From the vista I disregarded the advice of another friendly hiker and went back down a trail (mouse path) less taken and was rewarded by:
A mule deer doe, you may need to zoom to see her.

Her white rump stands out

And maybe her brother or boyfriend. Archery season is open here. Good luck seeing him.

A portal to Hell? Large badger den? Or just a reminder of the mining/exploitation history of the area.

Again thanks to Cleric for the info, it made a week away from home more bearable.

Neat pics Jeff....surely that isn't a mining tunnel access?
The ones around here are usually cut into a hillside like a cave entrance.

I think its an old one. It was just a guess. I really have no idea. I'm leaning toward the Portal to Hell explanation.

Seems like the most logical answer!
