Athabasca River

I was staying at a spot on the Athabasca River last weekend, and went for a walk in the morning. The trail follows an abandoned rail bed along the NW shore. Nothing special about it, particularly, except for the numerous animal tracks, the snowy trails, the fascinating sedimentary knolls above me, and the great views of the mountains farther upstream.

Bonus points for identifying all the tracks.

Excellent report Peter, as usual.  I’ve been enjoying catching up on these reports this evening; thanks for this one!

Great shots! I'm surprised there isn't more snow. Further south, we've gotten a lot. I spent the last few days skiing in the Methow. Lots of deer, but the most spectacular was seeing a stoat(short tailed weasel) in its winter coat.

The Athabasca River Valley gets Chinooks on a regular basis. Probably 2' in Edmonton but more like a few inches in Jasper.

Animal tracks are my favourite part of winter hiking. If you know what the weather conditions have been over the previous few days, it's a time-lapse story, and you can gather a lot of information about who went where and when.

I just found out this weekend that one of the trails I walked in summer is obviously swarming with rabbits. And quite a few, no doubt fat and happy, foxes. In summer I knew they were there, but I never guessed so many.
