howdy.....

this past weekend was another decent weekend to be out in the hills of tennessee so i went down to the sycamore creek trail to do a loop combining this and whigg ridge trail....

its an old roadbed and looks like this...

along the way, at a turn, a sign comes into view....

and picture of sign...

the second sign along trail...

and behind this sign sits a pretty nice little campsite...

at upper end of campsite, is this old bridge.....that leads to nowhere...

going down whigg ridge trail on sunday, at a gap, it amazes me where one can stash trash....

this area has been undergoing some prescribed burns.....and thought it would look interesting in black and white...

Kevin, what do you reckon is the purpose of this dam?

Let me try . . . .,

Yeah, Kevin---go to your webpage and stop the slideshow and then right click on "copy image location" and click Trailspace image and paste into External Image and see if this works.  It just worked for me, as above.

im thinking it has to do something with fishing....

the hatchery is basically right around the corner from the trailhead (dam is basically at trailhead)....

the arm opens a gate (or at least used to) open a gate to let water out...

but, its really not overly deep in that part...maybe a couple of feet..

it also could be something for water control or drinking water...

down from the trailhead is a big pipe (although pipe may be from the other fork of the river) that im guessing has water flowing through it....

the pipe may (and i stress may) go down to supply water to the old tellico lodge area----which now has cabins and trailers and a motel there...

Patman---that dam or weir is right next to the Tellico River fish hatchery and is used I think for stocking.  It's right at the trailhead to Sycamore Creek.

I've never hiked Trail 86 and have often wondered what it's like.  One day I'll have to do the usual Sycamore/86 loop.

fwiw, this is a great loop hike........easy elevation gain to get up to whigg ridge, which is steeper coming down...

total mileage is maybe 8 to 9 miles (there's a road walk to connect the two trails)...

or, one could even go up to whigg meadow for a side trip....

tipi----we're criss crossing messages----yeah.....see above about being a loop...

no real camping areas along whigg ridge, but it could be done...

and not much water...

i think i passed a spring on the lower part, and then about 0.3 from the intersection with sycamore creek trail is a small little stream....

Thanks Ewker for opening up some of his pics.  I know this spot well as it's in "Hobo Camp" and on the Sycamore Creek trail.  See my video of a trip with Little Mitten---

If you look you can see the same "footbridge".

Tipi--have you crossed over on the other side of the camp to see if that log bridge led anywhere?

Some old local boy or hunter told me about that cable and bridge and where it led but I just can't seem to remember.  I do know it had something to do with logging or something.

And if you follow the creek up it splits and one split goes up to Haw Mt and the Snowbird ridge.

BTW, back in 1899 two guys died on Huckleberry Knob (or near it) and went cross country up Sycamore Creek so they must've passed over Hooper Bald to Huckleberry and expired (winter).

Here's their cross on Huckleberry Knob.  It's interesting to know they went up Sycamore before checking out.  More info here---

interesting...

and yeah, i've seen the cross on huckleberry......stayed up there last fall.....

and made a trip down to little huckleberry (?) knob and furthur down and found an old road bed down in that area..........someone had flagged that road bed with ribbon, so it got me thinking about where that lead....

Hey Kevin---it would be neat to go over Huckleberry and down to Little Huck (I found an excellent campsite on Little Huck) and keep going down to Santeetlah River so I can connect the Wolf Laurel/Swan Cabin area to the Huckleberry?  I think there's an old road marked on my map below Little Huck.

Any knowledge of this??

Oh and plus, I guess you guys know of the Bartram Western extension which runs up Snowbird Creek and thru Mitchell Lick to Hogjaw Gap/Laurel Top and Big Jct on the Skyway.  Then it is supposed to climb up to Haw Knob and down to the Mud Gap/Whiggs trail on the BMT.  A grand adventure.

It was discussed here---

little huckleberry----yeah....i went past the the knob and through a good thicket of berry bushes and found the road......followed it for about a mile and a half before i turned around........i did check out some maps (like TI) that had the road on it.....i think one could tie it into the river but then it would be a long and uphill road walk to wolf laurel.....

the extension----yeah....when i went out to whigg meadow last fall, i saw the flagging tape that went off to the east.....maybe half mile ish from the meadow......i didnt realize that it was going to be part of the bartram, but then again, i dont know much about the bartram........

i plan on knocking out the snowbird area once it warms up a touch........figure it would take me a few weekends to do all those trails done there...

and hope to do the extension as well...

Regarding the Snowbirds---watch out for the Kings Meadow trail, it's a Hell Ride.  It starts out wonderful on a nice excellent footbridge (at the bottom trailhead) and you think, "Wow, this is gonna be nice!!" and then you hit Satan's Incline and the Weeping Open Sores, etc.

On one winter blizzard trip I did the snowed-in roadwalk from Wolf Laurel parking area down the road to FS road 81 and up to Stratton Meadows and the Skyway and back up to Beech Gap on the road and it too was a tough Nut Eater.

TRIP%20107%20155-L.jpg

Here's a view of the Wolf Laurel roadwalk heading down to 81 and Santeetlah River.  Aptly, the name of the trip is "20 Days of Hell".

ha.......i've been across the really nice bridge at bottom on the weekend that i did the sassafras falls loop trip.....

thought that was the snowbird creek trailhead, so i went up it a bit...

saw where kings meadow went uphill, and theres a trail that keeps going to the left that eventually dead ends.......thats when i found out that i wasnt on snowbird creek trail...

and yeah, that uphill looks like a beast...

maybe i can talk patman on doing it as a downhill with two cars..   :P
