Mt. Mansfield, 4393'. I managed to get out for a dash, and stay in Stowe, VT. Here are a few photos of a beautiful day, however quite a few of the locals were complaining about it being overcast... heh

Many ski slopes provide pretty vistas working the way up to The Long Trail.

Very easy going until you hop onto The Long Trail up by the top visitor center.

String lines the trails to keep the masses from trampling the alpine vegetation. And people still don't listen...

Are you a highpointer?

Thanks for sharing these great pictures, Sean! What a beautiful hike! I've never been hiking in VT, so I am glad to see a new place.

Thanks, Alicia! I'm not technically a 'high pointer', but have happened to visited a few points out here in the east.

Ashleigh- VT is a great place to visit in the summer! It is not too heavy with tourists, and there is quite a lot to see... Be sure to visit Montpelier if you make it out that way, it is hands down the coolest state capital I've ever visited!  If you happen to be a foodie, be sure to catch a dinner at the Royal Orchid... the have the best Thai food I have experienced!

Sean,

You might want to compare with my Sept 2011 visit to New England. I used airline miles to get a free flight from the Left Coast, stopped in Maine to visit the MacLeays, then hiked the High Points I had not visited while living in the Boston Area. My day on Mansfield was cold, rainy, and windy, though the other 5 High Points were on nice sunny days. I included a stop by Walden Pond and the site of Thoreau's cabin. I still puzzle over why there was only one string to mark the hiking path at the summit of Mansfield - which side of the string is the "low impact side". Lower down, there were pairs of strings to help you stay off the krumholz.

It looked as though people had damaged the twine at several points, but I'm not sure... I as well as other hikers had to speak with several people about staying on durable areas of the trail. Very sad... Thanks Bill for linking your report, I am always looking to add to my list of places to visit!

It's always tough to see people disregarding the rules in a fragile spot.

We lived in Stowe after college, and it's a great spot. And Montpelier, where my spouse's family is from, is a great little city. It gets a good mix of restaurants, thanks to the New England Culinary Institute.
