Excellent! Thanks for letting us know, Barb.

I figured no news was good news, until we actually heard some good news. Congratulations to Bill. I hope the rest of his trip goes well.

Arrived back in Punta Arenas this afternoon. I will provide more details about the 8 nights and 6 days we spent at High Camp in -25C temperatures and 30 kt average winds (gusts to 50 knots), only to summit on a perfect day. Long descent all the way to base camp and a quick flight to Union Glacier, brief overnight, then the Ilyushin back to Punta (and rain).  Antarctica is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to reading about it too, and hopefully seeing some pics :).  The closest most of us will ever get to such adventures is documentaries on TV (or trip reports on Trailspace :).

Well, one of the adventures of travel, especially in certain countries, is the question of whether the flight is going to go or not. I was supposed to get on the first leg of my return flight to the US today. But right now, some group is on strike, blockading the airport at Punta Arenas. So I may or may not get back home by tomorrow morning. The airline tells me that "all will be ok by 1PM" How do they know this?

According to one of the people here at the hostal, it is a revolution because the government is raising the price of gas (natural gas, I believe) by 20%. So in a few minutes there is a rally at the central plaza (3 blocks away).

I think I will stay out of the way.

These "rallies" can get ugly in a hurry. Keep your head low. I hope you get back without any more problems.

Currently the main crowd is at the central plaza (one block over and one block up from my hostal), mostly waving flags and driving around honking horns, plus the blockade at the airport. We shall see.

My little sister was in Central America when some crazy riots and "rallies" happened a couple years ago. She ended up being essentially smuggled out of the region in order to get home safe.

Good Luck, we all look forward to your safe return home.

After all the car parading, horn honking, flag waving, speechifying, and so on, the crowd dispersed in time to get to the airport and fly home.

Now I have to drive to the Southland for a family event that happens this weekend. Shoulda stayed in Antarctica.
