Cactus Climbing Miklat

photo: Cactus Climbing Miklat overnight pack (35-49l)

A very hard wearing pack. If you have ever had other packs wear out or fail before their time, then this is the pack for you.

Pros

  • Hard wearing
  • Big single compartment
  • No bits to catch on branches - the pack just slides by them
  • Cabin baggage size

Cons

  • Heavier than other day packs

Pack fits well and is comfortable. Easy to adjust hip belt. Doesn't come with a sternum strap but one can be added. If you ask when you order I'm sure they would fit it there and then. I haven't needed the sternum strap yet.

Big single compartment with drawstring closure, and lid with zippered compartment. Easy to access stuff inside the pack, and lid has a heavy duty zip. Fits more than enough for a day hike, and can be used for multi-day hikes as well (my 14 year old son used it for a 3 day hike recently). It is a 40l pack though, so you will need to pack carefully/light if using it for multi-day.

Very hard wearing and water resistant (canvas is coated). I have no concerns about pushing through or under branches. They just slide off the canvas leaving no mark. There are no outside pockets. For some this may be an issue, but for me it's less things to catch and tear.

Hydration sleeve will securely hold a full 3ltr Camelbak reservoir, and there are tube clips on both straps.

I've been using this pack for a couple of months, on day hikes up mountains (1000m plus, 6-8 hr hikes) and it works perfectly. Been rained on (heavily during 3 day hike) and it shrugs the water off. Dragged through bushes, no problem. Just brush the dirt off once dry.

If you want a hardwearing day pack that's made in New Zealand for tough conditions, then get a Miklat.
