rated 4.0 of 5 stars

This is a nice addition to the Clif Bar lineup of energy bars. The Peanut Butter flavored Nut Butter filled Clif Bar has an appealing softer consistency than the classic Clif Bars, which combined with a great taste, make these bars a nice option as a trail bar to throw in your pack for a day hike or a through hike.

Pros

  • Softer then a classic Clif Bar
  • Good taste and consistency
  • High calories per ounce

Cons

  • None

Years ago I used to be a big fan of classic Clif Bars, but as other manufactures brought a seeming endless number of options to the market, I started shifting to other trail bars that had less of a tendency to become rock hard at cold temperatures like the original Clif bar options.

Recently I noticed the filled variety of Clif Bars and decided to give them a try. So before a recent hike, I bought a couple of the Peanut Butter flavored Nut Butter Filled Clif Bars along with a couple of Strawberry Banana Fruit Smoothie Filled Clif Bars that caught my eye. I'll cover both bars in this review as I found them very similar.

Basic Info

Both of the bars have a net weight of 1.76 ounces and for an actual weight I found the Nut Butter Filled bar to weigh 1.8 ounces and the Fruit Smoothie bar to weigh 1.9 ounces. Based on the packaging, both of the bars contain 230 calories or 130 calories per ounce, which is great if you're someone focused on trying to maximize the number of calories per ounce with food you take on backcountry trips.

Consistency and Taste

I found both of the bars to my liking and I really didn't think they tasted all that much different (I'm 60 years old, so a lot of things taste the same nowadays...). I especially liked the consistency, which I found softer then a classic Clif Bar and is probably due to the filling at the center of each bar. Here is a picture of both bars set on their respective package.

I also found that the filling in each bar was very similar in both color, taste and consistency. The picture below shows the filling of the Peanut Butter flavored Nut Butter Filled bar after I took a bite out of it.

And the picture below is showing the filling in the Strawberry Banana flavored Fruit Smoothie Filled bar after I took a bite. I was expecting something more along what you might find in a jelly donut, but the filling was very similar to the Nut Butter Filled bar as I earlier indicated.

Summary

Overall I really like the both of the Nut Butter and Fruit Smoothie Filled versions of the Clif Bar and plan on bringing them on future hikes and wouldn't hesitate recommending them to anyone looking for a softer consistency high calorie content energy/trail bar.

Background

I have been hiking, backpacking, climbing since the '70s and have regularly brought trail/energy bars on all my trips. I generally don't bring a stove and rely on trail/energy bars for much of the food I bring on a trip and continually try the various bars being offered to find bars I'll enjoy eating while out on a trip.
