Recent Cold Weather Synthetic Sleeping Bag Reviews

ALPS Mountaineering Desert Pine -20

rated 4 of 5 stars A warm, but heavy, bag at a good price. I've only used this bag once, under the stars on my porch, after having to cancel a Scout overnight due to dangerous roads. The temperature started around the 20s and the low was 16°F with windchill bringing it down to single digits. It wasn't snowing, but a lot of snow was blowing around.  I slept on a 2" self-inflatable air-mat and wore Polartec Powerdry expedition-weight base layer top and bottom, a Polartec Thermal Pro fleece jacket, a knit acrylic hat,… Full review

Wiggy's Super Light FTRSS

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Worth almost every penny. I purchased this bag in January of 2012 to replace two bags (Eureka! 20 degree bag and Backside 0 degree bag) figuring that I wanted to do some Adirondack camping and would like the option to camp four seasons. At the time of purchase this system came with a free pillow made from the same material, but didn't come with its own stuff sack which wasn't a big deal, but would have been nice. The system was also on sale at the time, Wiggy's was having a sale that basically said… Full review

ALPS Mountaineering Crescent Lake -20

rated 5 of 5 stars Warmth, compressibility. Definitely recommended. For any person planning a backpacking trip in early spring, late fall, hut ski trips, mountain climbing, camping, etc. I am an avid backpacker and needed a relatively lightweight, heavy-duty, cold weather sleeping bag. This one fit the bill perfectly. I live in Colorado, and the nights get very cold. This bag keeps you warm all the way to your toes. There is not a lot of moisture buildup. There may be some if it is slightly humid/ raining but not… Full review

Slumberjack Latitude -20°F

rated 1 of 5 stars This is an overweight 30-degree bag imposing itself as a twenty below bag. I have never before seen such a mis-representation of a product without a company being sued or forced to recall its product. The problem is three-fold: Top has about 1" of loft, as noted by another reviewer (a -20 bag needs to bulge in the middle, not sag). Draft tube is not wide enough and not filled enough (it is a fairly-flat, 2" wide piece). Zipper catches and snags, not on the draft tube, but on the bag itself, ripping… Full review

Outbound Toaster 10000

rated 5 of 5 stars This sleeping bag is great. Heavy duty durable zippers, and very warm.  Used it deer hunting in late November in Central Alberta for 4 nights.  Never had to get up to stoke the fire in the outfitting tent once.  I slept nice and warm though the night. I would recommend to anyone who wants a great quality warm sleeping bag for a fair price. Full review

U.S. Armed Forces Modular Sleep System MSS

rated 4 of 5 stars Great value, flexible, a little heavy, but extremely durable. This system is exceedingly durable and very flexible. A huge bonus for this system is that depending on the conditions you can get by with either bag or both to cut down on weight. The bivy can almost be a tent in itself in a pinch. It is a little heavy and their are better performing lighter weight options available, but for the price this system is a very safe purchase that will perform reliably for years. Full review

The North Face Bigfoot

rated 5 of 5 stars Probably the most versatile, useful bag ever made. I haven't used this bag to climb Everest, but I've done just about everything else with it. I've used it a lot in the snow. I've used it on the open snow (with a pad underneath),  in snow caves, and in tents on the snow. I've never felt a cold spot with this bag, nor have I've ever felt a draft from the zipper, even in high winds.  The draft tube is excellent. The bag works when wet from rain, snow, or condensation. That's its chief virtue, and… Full review

Nebo Sports Teton -10

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Excellent made in USA value. IF you can find one [Discontinued] it will not cost an arm and a leg. Bag has no cold spots and seems to be reasonably rated. But I never trust any lowest rating, from any brand. Just my personal safety rule. I tested this bag down to low teens and had no problems. Tried it in upper 30s and had to zip it all the way down. Wearing only t shirt and undies. I paid $27 for my bag.Take that N F and all you other China sell outs!! Zippers are plastic of course. Most these… Full review

The North Face Dark Star -40

rated 3.5 of 5 stars If I weren't such a minimalist I would have kept this bag. The synthetic fill in this bag is the best and worst thing about it. It keeps you very warm on just about any night, works in moist environments, but it does not pack down small. I traded it with my brother, and his wife uses it for camping while I got his nice down bag that is not rated quite as cold.   I appreciate the packability of down. Also, I am becoming fed up with mummy-style bags. I really appreciate leg room, and my next sleeping… Full review
