User Review: Coleman Katmai 20

I bought this bag on closeout at a local Odd-Job store. The box was torn, but the bag and stuff sack were OK, so I took a chance. Here's what I have to say about this bag.

For the price I paid ($30) the bag was a steal! It is warm and comfortable, well insulated for what it is and breathable. I do not believe for a second it is gonna keep me warm at 20 F though. It is just too "lightweight" for that. I have used the bag to about 35 F and it kept me toasty, but 20 with a solid wind is pushing the limits I would think. It would keep you alive, I guess, but it wouldn't be very comfortable, I am sure.

I bought this bag because I need the rectangular foot space to sleep comfortably. I got a steal at the price, but I think all sleeping bags are vastly overrated for temperature. I always bring 2 bags (just in case), and only do car camping, so this bag WILL last for years to come, just bear the temp rating in mind. It compacts nicely, and the cotton liner is a BIG plus in my book. (I hate sleeping on polyester.)

I guess I am rather claustrophobic, and I don't like the drawstrings around my chest or neck (hood), but see where they were intelligently designed to be both accessible and usable.

The zipper tends to get snagged if you are not careful, but this model has dual zippers to open your feet if you need the draft.

IMHO, Coleman makes the best bang for the buck in utilitarian / mid-range gear.

This is no piece of junk bag, but is not a specialized piece of equipment you would want to take into the arctic, either.

A perfect casual cool-weather bag with an oversized 33X88 inches of room. (I am 5'10, but need my space when I sleep).

Very comfortable lining, outside is polyester that resists moisture. I would rate it an 8 out of 10. If it had another pound or so of insulation, and the zipper snag thing got worked out, I would probably give it a 10. I like the features this bag has, just generally don't need it.

Again, as far as the temperature rating goes...it may keep you alive at 20 degrees F, but I sure wouldn't be comfortable!

I believe this bag has been redesigned this year under the name "Coleman Ontario" and does come with another pound of inuslation....The color is different as well. Mine is a nice green color, but the new one on their website shows some awful orange color.

I would be interested in hearing how low on temp someone really got and stayed comfortable.....
