Use: Hiking, backpacking, approach
Break-in Period: Approx. 5 miles (1 or 2 short hikes)
Weight: A bit heavy (1 lb each, perhaps)
Price Paid: 54.99 CAD
These shoes have not been babied - I've had them for a year and a half, and worn them probably 2 out of every 3 days. They've mostly been used for hiking or walking long distances, often in snow, mud, or rain, as approach shoes, and for occasionally splashing through very large puddles. Although they don't have a Gore-Tex lining, and are not advertised as being waterproof, they are very water resistant. You have stand in a deep puddle for several minutes before your feet get more than a bit damp.
Break-in time was minimal, and my feet blister easily! The heavy tread is lasting well, and the only place of serious wear is in the heel cup, where the fabric has worn through to the plastic reinforcement (hence the loss of a star - more durable fabric in this area is definitely needed.)
I have narrow size 7 feet, and bought these shoes because they fit well (still a tiny bit too wide, but not enough to really make a difference). Plenty of room in the toebox (I have used the "Nipigon Nylon" system - liner sock with heavy wool work sock - with room leftover to wiggle my toes. I am not a fan of Columbia's quality, but have been pleasantly surprised by the durability, comfort, and water-resistance of these "entry-level" shoes!
