ZebraLight H502r Red AA Flood Headlamp

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This niche headlamp / flashlight is best used for preserving night vision or for light sensitive operations such as for astronomy, in the dark room, maybe tactical operations, as it has only a single red led. It is a flood style lamp, so there is no focused beam, it will only illuminate things in close quarters, enough for around camp but no more. While this lamp is a high quality product, I would not recommend it for most people due to how short the range is, enough for around camp, but no more. Full review

Ozark Trail LED Rechargeable Lantern

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Had this lantern for four years, and it worked great. Took battery out after each camping trip and recharged for next time, but now battery will not charge up. BUT used it for FOUR years, I say good product. I say good latern for the money. Just hard to find a replacement battery. Full review

Princeton Tec Helix Backcountry

rated 3.5 of 5 stars The Princeton Tec Helix Backcountry is a collapsible lantern, which uses three AAA batteries, to boast up to 150 lumens of ambient light. I’ve found it to be a versatile light as it can be used not just for backcountry camping but also as a backup headlamp, for bike commuting visibility, or as a Leave No Trace campfire alternative. The positives of the light are the battery life, multiple attachment options and the glow in the dark globe, which make it easy to find in the dark. Room for improvement? Full review

Princeton Tec Byte

rated 0.5 of 5 stars I purchased the light at Cabelas and agree with the problems everyone else has. The button is hard to push. We were working on a construction job close by and purchased it for that reason because I needed one that evening. I liked the size to wear on my hard hat. I used it two times and the button pushed in when I tried to turn it on. I know it is intended to be used for many other purposes, but if it doesn't work in construction then where will it hold up? I liked the size of the light with the… Full review

Magellan eXplorist 510

rated 1 of 5 stars Don't buy one !!!! They have random PCB problems. Don't buy one !!!! Most have a battery drain fault that Magellan won't fix. It's on the PCB and effects 510 610 710 randomly and it will get you stuck in the middle of nowhere!!!! Take them back while you have warranty and it's not the suspend mode or the screen capture. DeLorme inReach SE

rated 4 of 5 stars It worked when I really needed it in the Sierras (and was a comfort in Mongolia). I bought this device as my "rattlesnake plan." My plan is to always carry it on hikes as my Plan B if I get bitten (or break a leg, etc) too far from the trailhead for cell service and too far for my wife to find her way out (poor sense of direction). I bought it on sale at REI--$50 off plus $50 service credit, so effectively $200. I've used it on numerous day hikes in the SF Bay area and the Sierras and I used it… Full review

Outdoor Products Smartphone Watertight Case

rated 2 of 5 stars Storage case to protect your cell phone from water and damage while backpacking. This was purchased for me as a gift. The idea behind it is great, however, it's bulky and hard to open and close. I clipped it to my pack and found it to slam back and forth all over the place while hiking. It added more weight than I wanted for a protective cover. The two closures are not easy to open up or snap closed. Full review

Primus Polaris 360

rated 4.5 of 5 stars For those familiar with the Black Diamond Orbit and similar products, the Primus Polaris 360 hybrid flashlight/lantern is a simpler, less expensive, and more intuitive design. I recommend this product to anyone looking for an easily portable backcountry light that will serve multiple functions of use. I love this light! For the most part, I like it more than my Black Diamond Orbit. It is an LED flashlight/lantern hybrid that uses two (2) red diodes, and one (1) high powered white diode, powered… Full review

Princeton Tec Sync

rated 4 of 5 stars For the low price, this is an excellent basic headlamp, with several lighting options including red. Not as powerful as some other options, but fits the bill for normal use around camp. After years of dabbling with headlamps by borrowing from friends or trying them out in the store I finally decided to "switch" from a flashlight/headband combo to a headlamp. Bought the Sync for $30 but really paid nothing as it was just the leftover on my dividend from a large outdoor supplier. The lamp is a basic… Full review
