CritterMap Backcountry Navigator for Android

rated 5 of 5 stars Many people are going out and spending hundreds of dollars on a GPS, then at least a hundred more on mapping. I was one of them. This product works excellent for me and it is nice having a larger phone screen. I spend a lot of time out in  the backcountry hiking, quading, dualsport riding, and fly fishing. So I purchased a handheld GPS online, spent $450 with mapping "sale" price. It was a frustrating joke! The program was very difficult to learn, the screen was very small. I ended up selling it… Full review

Panther Vision LED Lighted Cap

rated 5 of 5 stars PowerCaps or Visors merge the cap and head lamp, eliminating weight from your pack. Great battery life. I always wear a cap or visor when I hit the trail and, of course, always need a headlamp. Power caps combine the two and allows you to eliminate a head lamp from your pack its base weight. Battery life is long and you wouldn't know the light is part of the cap.  It does use two CR2032 batteries which are easily found at home but maybe not a "trail town." Spares are much lighter than AA's or AAA's. … Full review

Petzl Strix IR

rated 5 of 5 stars Good light output. Small, lightweight, reliable, hands-free operation. Full review

Titanium Innovations Illuminati

rated 5 of 5 stars The best ultralight single AAA 132 lumen light for 2015. At 12 grams (0.4 oz), with the clip attached, there is no lighter headlamp on the market. And with a runtime on high of 1.5 hours, it has 3 times the runtime of the closest competitor in its class. This is one of the smallest, lightest and brightest lights in the world. High 132 Lumens (1.5+ hrs), Med 35 Lumens (4+ hrs), Low 3 Lumens (30+ hrs) 2.5 inches long x 0.5 inch diameter 12 grams, (0.4 ounces) with clip Uses 1 AAA battery The Illuminati is… Full review

Olight S10R Baton

rated 5 of 5 stars A perfect size light with incredible light output and flexibility with several modes. Fits the hand well and could be used by all levels of outdoor enthusiast. I totally recommend this light baton. The control of the light output is very good to fit every situation. The light throw is easily as stated at 100M. I have not fully tested the longevity of the rechargeable CR123 battery. The box states 50 minutes at the highest output of 400 lumens and 56 hours @ 5 lumens (moonlight). The middle setting… Full review

Kestrel DROP D2

rated 3.5 of 5 stars The Kestrel Drop 2 Datalogger is a tiny sensor that links with your iPad or iPhone to provide environmental measurements remotely. It is handy for checking the temperature when you are comfortable inside your tent or snow shelter and sleeping bag or for monitoring fresh food you carry for the first few days of a backpacking trip. Background: Have you ever been nice and cozy inside your tent and wondered what temperature awaited you outside your tent? Or, on the other hand, been roasting inside your… Full review

Princeton Tec Vizz

rated 4 of 5 stars I have to say overall not a bad light for its price point. It does the job well, not great, but well. I have not used this light for extended periods of time yet. What I can say is that it is a pretty decent light at its price point. I'm definitely a light freak. I have many flashlights. It's kind of a hobby. I can say if you spend a few more dollars there are better options out there. The main plus is this is available at local stores and doesn't have to be bought online. I have really only used… Full review

Black Diamond Sprinter

rated 5 of 5 stars Throws out lots of light. Comfortable and stable while running. I wanted a headlamp that would throw enough light and not bounce around while running. The Black Diamond Sprinter is great on both counts. It actually illuminates far more than I expected — I have no problem seeing any obstacles on the trails and roads that I normally run on. The headlamp is very comfortable and stable. I always recharge it fully after each run, but it's probably not the headlamp you want for a multi-day trip. I haven't… Full review

Petzl Zipka Plus

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Compact, light, and reliable. Have used this nimble, compact head-torch for years now. Not only is it a good and reliable piece of kit to have with you on a camping trip or expedition, but it is also ideal for everyday tasks such as walking the dog. I have grown to love this little torch over the years and it has proved itself to me on many a darkened occasion — I once dropped it in a river and when I managed to fish it out, it was still in perfect working order. It gives you plenty of notice… Full review
