Garmin inReach Explorer+

rated 4 of 5 stars Best option on the market for a cross between a locator beacon and a cell phone when cell coverage is not available. GPS features aren't great for typical Garmin products, but still serves its purpose. Overall it's a great product and I feel it will serve its purpose well for my upcoming solo backpacking trip in Alaska where cell coverage is non-existent. I don't really need the mapping ability, but it was a nice plus. The primary reason I bought it was for the SOS capability, secondary was to… Full review

Garmin Foretrex 301

rated 4 of 5 stars Tough little device, handy for hiking and other active sports. I use this device for hunting, jogging, canoeing, and hiking for about three years. While it’s too small to have detailed maps and other niceties, its “breadcrumbs” mean I can always find my way back to the start, and I can focus on looking for game, instead of looking for markers to backtrack. The “AAA” batteries make it a little bulky, but it means you can change to fresh batteries while you are out for extended periods. … Full review

UCO X-120R

rated 1.5 of 5 stars This headlamp has no reason to be on the market. It delivers very little, the design has no sense, and it's just not powerful enough. I can't really understand why should anyone choose this headlamp over the other. I want a headlamp that is light, sturdy, comfortable with long battery life. This headlamp is uncomfortable. The unit keeps slipping down from its position. The output is weak. The control over the light beam is not enough. It's not focused enough for long distance or dispersed enough… Full review

Midland GXT1000VP4 2-Way Radios

rated 5 of 5 stars These “walkie talkie” and their headsets are wonderful. As a member of another website, I sometimes get the opportunity to test out products in exchange for a review. The transmit audio was robust and loud. Whisper mode was interesting, as it really amplified quiet "whispered".  I got over 8 hours of use on a full charge, and they seemed to charge pretty fast on the desk charger. My main (minor) complaint is that you have to use the charging base with the proprietary adapter plugs, either the… Full review

Princeton Tec Apex

rated 1.5 of 5 stars Unreliable quality. It's bright and lasts long enough but it seems to break very easily under normal caving or camping conditions. Great return policy, but it gets old constantly returning a product that's supposed to be reliable. I've returned the product twice and both times Princeton Tec gave me a new one with no questions asked. My second replacement has broken now and I suspect Princeton Tec will give me a new one with no questions asked this time as well, I'm just not sure it's worth the headache. Full review

Renogy 15000mAh Solar Power Bank

rated 4 of 5 stars A creative, multi-function solar power bank. Renogy Solar Power Bank 15000mAh PROS Small   Lightweight  Versatile 2 USB ports Integrated LED light Additional detached light CONS No instructions Finicky USB ports The Renogy Solar Power Bank is a relatively small portable 15000mAh source of energy for handheld personal devices. Boasting a 2W solar panel with two USB outputs of 5.0V each. As a member of another website, I am given products to test from time to time in exchange for a review. The… Full review

Suaoki SunPower 14W Solar Charger

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Lightweight, compact, and inexpensive solar charger, providing adequate power supply in stationary state. The build quality is surprisingly good, but there is still some room for improvement. It has somewhat limited use scope due to inability to provide adequate power on the go. Also its effective usage is not really straightforward and requires sunny weather. Background My first experience in solar panels was GoalZero Nomad 7, a gift from our close friend. In folded state it was about A5-sized… Full review

Midland HH50B Pocket Weather Alert Radio

rated 5 of 5 stars Great little lightweight weather radio that runs on batteries, no charger needed! Fantastic for getting a weather report where there is no cell phone signal. As a member of another website, occasionally I receive a product in exchange for an honest review. This is one of those products. This is an amazing little piece of technology. It allows you to be disconnected from reality and technology while staying safe and alert. Or if you just can't get a cell signal, but you have to know what's coming… Full review
