NiteCore P12

rated 5 of 5 stars Light, bright, with a simple user interface, this light carries easily. A variety of accessories increases its versatility. The user interface is straightforward and quickly mastered. You can set the light to turn on at any of four levels. A strobe, blinking beacon, and SOS are readily available using a separate switch. The light is compact and reasonably light, although too heavy to appeal to ultralighters. The light uses either CR123s or an 18650 battery. Go to school and learn about 18650s; they… Full review

Princeton Tec Vizz

rated 1 of 5 stars Why do the batteries routinely go dead after just a few hours? The first Vizz I owned seemed to have an electrical short -- why else would the battery go dead so quickly? So I called Princeton Tec to report the problem and they graciously agreed to have me send it back to them. They soon sent me another -- and the life of the batteries is equally poor: maybe 2 hours of use, and now the red light indicating low battery life is flashing. The problem with the burn time negates any redeeming qualities… Full review

Joby Gorillapod Original

rated 3 of 5 stars I am actually on my third Gorillapod (explanation to follow!), and have been actually generally pleased with it. I use it for photos of our group when hiking or paddling, self-pictures when I am alone on an adventure, or attached to our kicksled to take videos with our Olympus Stylus TG-2 camera (no, we are not GoPro users). This seems to work fine as a small, flexible, tripod, for basic uses. Okay, immediate disclosure. I am on my third Gorillapod because I lost #1 (black and grey) at a canoe launch… Full review

Princeton Tec Apex

rated 5 of 5 stars A great headlamp. Waterproof battery pack a key feature. A really good product. Got it for under $50 on Sierra Trading. Store without batteries to prevent leakage. Full review

OtterBox 1000

rated 4 of 5 stars The Otter Box is a low-cost investment that protects high-cost electronic devices and other important items that need to stay dry. This reviewer's first-hand account speaks to the value of owning and using the Otter Box 1000 in the outdoors. 5 STARS for durability and reliability. 3 STARS for recent business decisions (see final section of this review). Picture this true-life scenario... I had just spent several minutes carefully climbing a 50' high pile of breakdown in a Tennessee cave. At the… Full review

Garmin eTrex 30

rated 4 of 5 stars Don't go in to the mountains without it. I use my Garmin eTrex 30 from hiking/backpacking to 4-wheeling and every other time I head up to the mountains. I received this as a gift and have been using it for almost a year now. There are a lot of great features that this device has from basic GPS and compass, trip computer, waypoints to area calculations, clocks/alarms, proximity alarms, sight 'N go, you name it, it seems to have all the bells and whistles. I use the trip computer every time I… Full review

CritterMap Backcountry Navigator for Android

rated 5 of 5 stars Many people are going out and spending hundreds of dollars on a GPS, then at least a hundred more on mapping. I was one of them. This product works excellent for me and it is nice having a larger phone screen. I spend a lot of time out in  the backcountry hiking, quading, dualsport riding, and fly fishing. So I purchased a handheld GPS online, spent $450 with mapping "sale" price. It was a frustrating joke! The program was very difficult to learn, the screen was very small. I ended up selling it… Full review

Panther Vision LED Lighted Cap

rated 5 of 5 stars PowerCaps or Visors merge the cap and head lamp, eliminating weight from your pack. Great battery life. I always wear a cap or visor when I hit the trail and, of course, always need a headlamp. Power caps combine the two and allows you to eliminate a head lamp from your pack its base weight. Battery life is long and you wouldn't know the light is part of the cap.  It does use two CR2032 batteries which are easily found at home but maybe not a "trail town." Spares are much lighter than AA's or AAA's. … Full review

Petzl Strix IR
