Recent Expedition Pack (4,500+ cu in) Reviews

Lowe Alpine Netherworld 90

rated 3.5 of 5 stars I've had this pack since the early '90s and it has served me well. I ended up getting Deuter's Act Lite 65+10 and shaved off about 3 pounds but that pack is already worn through in a few places. I have used the Lowe in the Sierras with 45-50 pounds and in the snow with snow shoes and it seems indestructible. The fit was adjustable with the help of the store personnel. The volume was wonderful. The separate compartment on the bottom served as another storage area without having to go into the main… Full review

Deuter Aircontact 75+10

rated 5 of 5 stars Wonderful backpack. Very comfortable. Had a lot of room inside and many straps outside that you can attach you gear to them. Will advise that backpack to everyone. The best backpack I've ever had. Full review

Deuter ACT Lite 75+10

rated 5 of 5 stars Comfortable adjustable pack that can adapt to haul a lot or a little. Quality construction with some thoughtful details. Weighs in at 4 lbs 5 oz, a good compromise between weight and haul-ability. Age and prior back injuries has made finding a backpack I could wear a difficult task. With the Deuter Act Lite 75+10, I finally found a pack that I could not only carry but was comfortable also. For me, the key was to find a pack that did not put any pressure directly on my spine. The "air contact" system… Full review

Osprey Volt 75

rated 5 of 5 stars Great fit without a lot of weight. I would definitely recommend this backpack for anyone doing a 3-4 night outing. Just purchased this pack in July 2014. Have used it 4 times in the Adirondacks of NY and AT in NJ and Maine. I bought it for the lesser pack weight of 3lbs 12oz vs my other, older Osprey pack. This is a one-size-fits-all pack with an adjustable stay system that I really liked, especially if you're an in-between size like me. It carries 4,700 cu, so I did have to choose my gear wisely… Full review

Berghaus Expedition Light 80

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Berghaus Expedition Light 80 is a large capacity pack with a lightweight design. It has a surprisingly supportive suspension system which provides comfort in the hips and shoulders. It has a low, stable profile, even while strapping everything from skis to my dog's pack to the outside. It can be warm during hot days. I would recommended the Expedition Light to backpackers and mountaineers looking for a large capacity pack that is functional with heavy loads in the 50 plus pound range all seasons… Full review

The North Face Crestone 75

rated 5 of 5 stars Comfort is the one word I would use to describe this pack. Plenty of room and great support. Great pack with enough room for a thru hike. Love this pack, a bit on the heavy side though. Full review

REI Mars 80

rated 5 of 5 stars You can disappear for seven days with this very comfortable pack without leaving any gear behind. Great Pack. I have used this on a 50-mile trip hiking the north loop in Glacier National Park and a 38-mile trip on the AT in North Carolina. I carried six days worth of food on both trips. I tend to bring  a lot of unnecessary gear, chairs, hammock, electronics, and a big first aid kit. The Glacier trip I carried 65 pounds without discomfort and had to scramble a couple of times. Pack feels like a… Full review

Kelty Red Cloud

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Comfortable shoulder straps, lots of space and pockets to store all your hiking needs. Have had issues with the side pocket zippers failing. Full review

ALPS Mountaineering Cascade 5200

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Nice pack for the price, roomy. Good for long term backpacking. Held all my gear for a 10-day trip plus 5 days food. In preparation for a 10-day trek to Philmont, the Boy Scout backpacking paradise in NE New Mexico, I purchased a Cascade 5200. We did two long weekend training trips in Kansas and finally our big trip in New Mexico. The pack was roomy, held all my gear and at one time 5 days worth of food. The zippers were large and sturdy. The zippers held up well and didn’t catch on the material. Full review
