Arc'teryx Bora 80

rated 5 of 5 stars In this world of ultralight BPing gear is there still a place for this 7-lb beast? Answer, "Oh hell yeah!" I bought this pack when they were still made in Canada. It is not made of the lighter waterproof materials that I've read about in some reviews. So what? That's why they make dry bags and pack covers. The benefits of the older Bora 80s is they are virtually indestructible. Let me put it to you like this and I'll let you ponder the implications of having something that weighs a couple of pounds… Full review

Arc'teryx Bora 95

rated 5 of 5 stars Great large capacity pack that is excellent in cold wet/snowy weather. I've put this pack through some interesting situations. Once, I wanted to camp out on an island on a river so I threw the full pack on an inner tube and swam across the river to the island. Along the way the pack was about 1/4 submerged. When I unpacked, everything was dry.  Another time I brought the pack up a frozen river with a bunch of small, frozen-over cascades. On the way out, I rode the pack down the iced river on a… Full review

Lowe Alpine Morning Star 75L+

rated 4 of 5 stars Large single compartment, no frills, no extras, water resistant pack. Does the job well but offers little in access points. Fit: Fits well and fits a variety of sizes. I've lent the pack to others over the past several years and everyone has said that it was a good ride. Comfort: I find the pack is very comfortable. The hip and shoulder straps don't look like much but they have a pretty firm closed cell foam core that works pretty well.  Capacity: This pack holds a surprising amount. It expands… Full review

Osprey Crescent 85

rated 5 of 5 stars Great pack for extended trips. Places majority of weight on the hips. Very comfortable and very durable. It is my current go to pack. Fit: Form fitted foam for the hips. Shoulder straps are very comfortable. I bought the pack used and did not get it re-fitted but the pack is still fantastic. I think the pack distributes a bit too much to the hips and my hips were sore for the first two days of a week-long trip. If I get the hips re-molded, I think it will solve the problem.  Comfort: Minus the… Full review

Gregory Palisade 80

rated 4 of 5 stars Finally used this for something beyond car camping. Went on a 4-day backpacking trip with son and a few others from his Boy Scout Troop. Pack was comfortable and a bottomless pit. Four-day backpacking trip with son's Boy Scout Troop and the Gregory Palisade 80 took everything I had ... even when I fell on it. It carried my gear and a good bit of the Troop gear with room to spare. The articulating hip belt made the pack feel like it wasn't even there at times even though it weighed in well over 45… Full review

The North Face Renegade

rated 5 of 5 stars I really really love this pack!!! Bought it in the mid '90s and I still have it and use it.  Has traveled with me through Europe, Middle East, and exploring the Annapurna Range in Nepal's Himalayas — has never let me down yet.  Now using it hiking, camping, backpacking with my sons and with their scout troop. It outperforms many of the new packs being used.  Have looked at other packs but none match up to this one. Its like your first love or car, you love them forever!!! Full review

Lowe Alpine Netherworld 90

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great pack!!!!! I bought this pack used but in great condition about 6 years ago. It has been virtually indestructible. I have been on at least 70 overnighters and weekend trips with it and it is still going strong. I love all of the outside pockets and it has enough room to go on long hauls. It has not had a tear once and I have gone under and through some fairly thick stuff. The only thing I didn't like about this pack was there is no padding above the waistbelt. During the summer this was actually… Full review

REI New Star

rated 5 of 5 stars I highly recommend this pack if you can find one used in good shape. Big enough for a long trip, not so big it isn't practical for a weekend. Well made and long lasting (mine finally quit after 19 years and 800+ miles). I bought my New Star two years used in 1997. It had seen some trail time then. Over the next 18 years, I added over 700 miles of use to it from there. The hip strap finally broke (actually only the plastic insert broke, the nylon and padding was OK; I finished two days and 16 miles… Full review

REI Great Star

rated 4 of 5 stars Very large pack with lots of size adjustment and all the basic features you want. Well made and long lasting. Prone to being under filled and causing gear/load to shift or sit oddly, especially on shorter hikes. Great for big/tall persons or longer trips. Just inherited my Great Star from my father after my New Star finally gave up (19 years and over 800 miles on it).  My dad bought the pack new in 1998 and it has about 400 miles on it from him. I can and have comfortably carried about 80 lbs of… Full review
