Recent Expedition Pack (4,500+ cu in) Reviews

Deuter Aircontact 75+10

rated 5 of 5 stars Awesome pack! This shares with my Kelty 75 the honor of being the best pack I have ever carried. Now I have not carried loads north of maybe 35 pounds but this pack is designed for much more. The maker designates this as a "expedition" pack, whatever they may mean by that. The sleeve gives another 10 liters and both measurements seem accurate. The design is sophisticated and can hardly be improved upon. Great belt and harness. Incredibly versatile adjustability that allows a big (5' 11" man with… Full review

Lowe Alpine Contour IV 90+15

rated 4 of 5 stars Great price, tough pack. I am a big guy and long waisted to boot. I wanted a big pack when I got back into backpacking and this is the one I bought new (I picked up a second at Goodwill for less than $4). My older three season sleeping bag is a synthetic fill and it is bulky, as is much of my older gear. The suspension is well designed, the waist belt is wide and comfortable, it rides about as well as any pack this size could. But...this is more pack than I need and more pack than almost anyone… Full review

Gregory UM21 Backpack

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Still relevant. Do you abuse gear? Do you hike off-trail, through brush, over rocks and don't want to worry about a branch tearing a hole in the latest, lightest and most expensive nano-fabric? Have you passed through the ultralight gear stage and want a pack (or in addition to UL) that lasts longer than two seasons (wasteful) and doesn't require kid gloves treatment? Are you patriotic? Do you want to reduce your visual footprint with badass three-color desert or woodland camo options? Do you need… Full review

ULA Equipment Catalyst

rated 4.5 of 5 stars One of the lightest full sized packs out there. Comfortable at 40 pounds or less and very durable. I tried quite a few different packs in the 65+ liter range and found that the ULA Catalyst is one of the lightest and most comfortable packs out. It does great between 25-35 pounds but at and over 40 pounds other packs carry the weight better.   My first use of this pack was on the Four Pass Loop in Aspen, Colorado, and we were pinching ounces trying to get weight down. The bear canister cost me 2.5… Full review

Dana Design ArcFlex Terraplane

rated 5 of 5 stars As an outdoor professional, I bought my Terraplane in 1996 through a work for trade deal from Appalachian Outdoors. It has been my only pack ever since. I have used it on every trip from Malaysia to Maine. My friends gave me a hard time spending 300 bucks on a pack, but 20 years later, I still have it. I have always believed in buying something once, even if it is pricy. I still have my Wiggy's sleeping bag and WhisperLite Internationale stove I last used to make coffee and warm a baby bottle on… Full review

Kelty Red Cloud 5400

rated 5 of 5 stars I've packed with the 5400 for the last 12 years. I carry from 60 to 75 lbs. It finally wore out. I'm old enough to get one a little smaller so I can't carry so much. Fit: Adjustable, so as I got older, I could adjust for comfort. Capacity: Too much, I carried maximum 75 lbs. This pack is the work horse of backpacks. Full review

Kelty Coyote 80

rated 4 of 5 stars A bomb proof pack that does it a little on the heavy side. This product is best for 2+ day expeditions in any terrain. I would recommend this to a friend with a larger waist. The pack fits excellent and true to size. I however have a smaller waist and even with the straps fully tightened it is a little too big around the belt. I have hiked with this pack on multi-day treks and it is very comfortable. Everything is adjustable. The torso adjustment came in very handy seeing I have a longer torso. Full review

Osprey Xenith 105

rated 4 of 5 stars A big pack. Understand that it is mostly one compartment. There are not lots of small pocket on this thing. Meant to haul a lot of gear, this thing is big, but in a wide and out kind of way. It is not much taller than most other 60L Ospreys, but goes out much further instead. Bought this pack for a PCT section hike. This thing is big. Went on an overnight. So far works well. Make sure hip straps are high enough. Mine were to low and bruised me. Good pack for longer trips, but too big for just a… Full review

Gregory Stout 75

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This pack is a beast. If you have a lot of volume to carry this is the pack for you. Remains comfortable with a heavy load. Pocket arrangements allow for organized packing. The Gregory Stout fits quite well and sits comfortably on shoulders and hips. That being said I do not wear a belt when backpacking as the pack drives the belt into my hips, which is uncomfortable. Hip belts and shoulder and sternum straps are all adjustable and easy to adjust on the fly. The foam on the back and hip belts provide… Full review
