Mountainsmith Frostfire III

rated 5 of 5 stars I've had two, first was stolen, bought replacement ~1995. Used it for years (5'10" ~180) bought a Frostfire II for my wife, she still uses it. Mine went to a friend who's 6'8" and was struggling to fit a pack. The tape measure torso length straps were brilliant, and gave this pack more work to do, and my friend USES this pack. Hopefully we'll be chasing mule muzzleloader deer in Colorado with it in 2016. I'll be carrying another Patrick Smith pack, a Kifaru Duplex. I've had two of these packs. The… Full review

Camp Trails Wilderness (Internal)

rated 5 of 5 stars I just retired this pack after many years of use. It was my second pack and I love it. The external pocked are a plus. I had this pack for a long time and it was a wonderful pack. Five external pockets make getting to your gear a lot faster. As my gear got smaller and lighter I needed a smaller pack. The mesh pockets in the center makes organizing easy. I'll miss this pack! I got it used so I really don't know the cubic inches. I took two week-long trips with it and still had room left. I was never… Full review

High Sierra Appalachian 75

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This backpack is wonderful for outdoor excursions and backpacking trips. It is a little on the heavy side, but it is perfect for moderately long backpacking trips. Holds all of the gear, food, clothing, and first aid I need for a comfortable and fun trip into the wilderness. I recommend this product highly for avid and casual backpackers alike, as it fits well and functions in a practical and efficient manner. This pack is absolutely amazing. I received it as a gift from a family member and it has… Full review

JanSport Big Bear 78

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is a solidly built pack that has held up for many trips and many years. This pack has held up real nice for many years. I have taken it many miles, and there are a few things I learned while using this pack. Fill your water bladder with room temperature water and put it in a plastic bag before putting it in the bladder sleeve. This will prevent your bladder from condensing, which prevents the inside of your pack from getting wet. This pack works for me, some people who have put it on empty… Full review

Mile High Mountaineering Fifty-Two 80

rated 1.5 of 5 stars After 27,000 miles with a variety of backpacks, I've had no problems till now. The shoulder strap twists out of its flat position unto its edge, pressing into the chest like a rope. The force actually pulls the clip of the sternum strap off its track. Very uncomfortable. Customer Service appears silent additionally on its quality control. After 27,000 miles with a variety of backpacks, I've had no problems till now. The 5280 looks like a luscious lollypop and yet has a critical design flaw. The… Full review

Deuter ACT Lite 75+10

rated 4 of 5 stars A great, simple, and functional backpack. The first review of this product is very accurate.  It's comfortable, durable, and a great value.  I just wanted to mention another wonderful feature: The removable top that converts into a day pack. This adds invaluable versatility. For wilderness backpacking, after establishing a base camp you can use the use the day pack for day/summit hikes without hauling the main pack around. The day pack has enough space for about day's worth of food and water,… Full review

Dana Design Stillwater

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Great pack... minimal bells and whistles. I think of it as a "sack with a flap." In 2000 I re-walked Colin Fletcher's 1000 Mile Summer. This was my pack and it served me very well (and still does). I see that Dana is still using some of the old pack designs in his Mystery Ranch products. If I ever wear this one out I will give MR products a look. The only complaint I have is, it's a heavy pack when empty. That being said, I still think a lighter weight pack may have never lasted this long... it… Full review

Tika Cardrona

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I looked at both the Fairydown and Macpac alternatives, but this had a better detachable daypack. Twenty years later I'm still really happy with it. Fairydown eventually bought Tika, and so that was the end of that :( Full review

Mystery Ranch NICE 6500

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This big hauler is for winter expeditions, bulky gear, and heavy loads. It's built like a Sherman tank and you could probably carry a "Deuce and a half" in it. If you're into S&M you can hurt yourself with this pack. Seriously, you can load it with more than you can carry. I bought the pack two years ago. My first trip with it was nearly a year ago, the week between Christmas and New Years into the Unicoi Mountains and Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Area. I knew it would be cold. I packed all my geese.
