Osprey Aether 85

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A great pack for any trip. The pack is big enough for 5-7 days and useful enough for 2-3 day trips. I have used this pack for three seasons and I have been nothing but pleased with it. I am also comforted by Osprey's Lifetime Warranty and have used it once on a previous pack and was impressed with the work they were able to do! This pack can easily let you carry 50 lbs, but why would you? It fits me like a glove and I have never had any rubs or bruises. It has a webbed outside pocket that keeps… Full review

Kelty Red Cloud 90

rated 1 of 5 stars Least rugged pack I've ever witnessed. Internal frame will wear through the weakest of nylon and stick out the bottom. Great for a bad back — puts all the weight on the hips — until the pack fails. This is the least rugged pack I've ever owned. I bought this after two back surgeries, so I'm carrying the least in my entire life. The biggest problem is that the internal frame rests on their thinnest nylon, totally not reinforced — even a little. So if you hike a bit, the rubbing action makes… Full review

Osprey Xenith 88

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This bag is a well designed expedition hiking backpack. It has a superb carrying comfort and excellent organization to make long expeditions possible. The Xenith 88 is Osprey's large, expedition worthy backpack. I have used this pack on a three-month expedition in the American Southwest, a 5-day backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and an overnight where I was carrying gear for two people. This pack is comfortable and feature rich, while also being durable enough to handle off-trail… Full review

Dana Design ArcFlex Alpine

rated 5 of 5 stars The workhorse of heavy duty mountaineering packs. For three decades I've carried this pack. I had the foam back pad replaced and re-padded the shoulder straps. Recommended for the gal or guy heading on a mountaineering tour or world tour. I bought this pack new in the mid '80s with the removable side pockets. I've had options to carry other packs on serious multi month trips and always default to my old D.D. ArcFlex Alpine. Securing and balancing the load is simple if packed with common sense. The… Full review

Dana Design Astralplane

rated 4 of 5 stars It can carry a ton of stuff. Not a lot of extra features. I have the large version of this, in red. Bought at EMS sports 1995. I once (stupidly) loaded out 80lbs for a trip in the Wemenuche Wilderness in Colo. The pack handled it fine; I didn't so much. Much more comfortable at 65lbs or less. Taken on more than a dozen or so 5-7 day trips mostly in CO, also in NM and AZ (spring canyon hikes). Used mostly in the summers between 1995 and 2003. Marriage and kids killed my backpacking career. The belt… Full review

Arc'teryx Bora 95

rated 5 of 5 stars A tough, durable backpack designed to last forever! You can fit a vast volume of things in this backpack, so it's perfect for longer trips, i.e. not for ultralight backpacking. Conditions: I'm living in Ecuador, and have been working a couple of years in the jungle, making maps. The humidity is constantly high and the vegetation is pretty much always wet, there are thorns and sharp rocks everywhere, and the elevations differences lead to quite high falls. I routinely fall into mud and every now… Full review

High Sierra Appalachian 75

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great pack for medium to long hikes.Net pockets on each side for easy access to water bottles and room/pockets to organize gear. I purchased for taking a Scout troop on a multi-day hiking trail. They needed a medical professional in order to go on trail, so I needed a pack that would hold my food, tent, sleeping bag, cooking, food, water, and my medical equipment. This pack proved very good for this purpose. After 3+ days the pack kept everything in order and was very comfortable. Definitely would… Full review

Mountainsmith Circuit 3.0

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I use this pack for multi-day trips into Wilderness. It is extremely comfortable and easy to adjust without stopping. I am with a federal agency. I am also a wildland firefighter and I use this pack when I take the "pack test." Loaded with 45 lbs I can do three miles in less than 45 minutes with no pain or strain with the Mountainsmith Circuit 3.0. After 30 years of backcountry travel and backpacking this pack feels better than any I have used or owned! Full review

Gregory Deva 85

rated 4 of 5 stars Very comfortable pack that can carry a heavier load and fit smaller (petite) lady hikers (xs size). As a petite (5'2") hiker, I was having a tough time finding a pack that fit comfortably. Tried men's small, but the fit was wrong. I needed a pack to carry lots of gear up Mt. Rainier and extended hikes and this pack sealed the deal. It fit my short torso comfortably, like a glove (xs frame option). First, it is a little heavier than most packs due to padding on the waist, back, and shoulders, but… Full review
