Recent Expedition Pack (4,500+ cu in) Reviews

Osprey Volt 75

rated 4 of 5 stars Good pack for 2-5 day trips, good storage, good construction. Fit: Easy to adjust to my body type. I'm "that athletic guy", 5'10" 165 lbs. Comfort: When the pack is fitted properly it helps me stand with pretty good posture (although leaning forward a little), and that helps out a lot for longer trips because my back feels fine. The hip belt is OK and does wrap around my hips, but after a while doesn't feel that great. Because I have a fairly trim figure I don't have a lot of cushion on my hips,… Full review

ULA Equipment Catalyst

rated 5 of 5 stars The ULA Catalyst is a very sturdy pack for thru hikes and daily hikes. The pack is very lightweight and roomy. ULA has made a very great pack that is made for men, women, and children. The Catalyst fits like a glove. It adjusts very easily by pulling on the strap adjusters. The Catalyst is a very deep bag. It has a inside compartment that takes all your gear. The hipbelt is completely adjustable and replaceable if you need to go from Small to Large to Extra large. The water bottle holder on the… Full review

Lowe Alpine Contour IV 90+15

rated 4 of 5 stars It is a very large and tough backpack. I've backed it with heavy loads and it tackles it pretty easily. This pack is a beast! I have literally drug and threw this pack around and it has not ripped or been damaged. I bought it in an auction, two years ago, for about $15.  I would pay a lot more for a pack like this. Even though it was used it works great and is very durable. I love the compression straps that allow you to adjust for different size loads. Because it is so big you should at least… Full review

The North Face Renegade

rated 5 of 5 stars Hiked 88 miles at Philmont Scout Ranch with this pack in 2016. It is simply an awesome pack, tons of room, very flexible and received many comments from hikers that recognized my "vintage" pack. Going back to Philmont with my son in 2017 and taking the Renegade with me. Buy one if you can find one on the web. They are hard to find and sell very quickly on eBay and gear trade. One of the best packs that North Face has ever made. Awesome design, plenty of room, "vintage" looks, and very comfortable… Full review

Trigon Deva

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Carries nicely at 50 lbs, and good pockets with the sleeping bag compartment un-zipable to make a continuous space. Well padded harness and shoulder straps. I carried waders, boots, flys and a tent and big pot and stove—90 liters. Full review

Gregory Forester

rated 5 of 5 stars Bought in 2000. Still going strong. Bomb proof durability. One of the best packs I've ever even heard of. Old school Gregory. This thing is amazing. Has held up for working on 20 years now. What more can you ask? And I've had as much as 75+ lbs in it. Yes, the ride gets a little... eh, when she's loaded that heavy. But she was never designed for that, and still takes it like a champ. My go-to for the tough and long ones. Full review

The North Face Snow Leopard Pack

rated 5 of 5 stars The North Face Snow Leopard men's internal backpack I picked up in 1986 at EMS Sporting Goods in Pinkham Notch, Gorham, New Hampshire the day before I hiked the Tuckerman Trail. It was $460, and it was the best $460 I ever spent. The backpack is grade A+++++ Nothing less then awesome. It's now 31 years old and the straps are as strong as the first day I tightened them up in the store and in 31 years I have only had to replace two load buckles, the waist/hip buckle and one of the small buckles, and… Full review

JanSport Alaska

rated 4 of 5 stars Great BIG pack. I've had this pack for about twelve years, mostly for day hiking for exercise and camping. The straps feel great and the adjustments are very easy. The hip strap could be a little longer, definitely not for those of us with a bigger belly. If this pack doesn't have the capacity you need, get an RV. There is plenty of room for everything you need to take with you. I carry two tanks of fuel for my stove, a three-piece cook set, a bivy tent, sleeping bag, large tent pegs, water purifier,… Full review

Dana Design Astralplane Overkill

rated 5 of 5 stars Can haul heavy loads great, fits well and lots of adjustment, side and top access. I have had 130 pounds in mine, still looks new. Love this pack. I have a few others, but this is my go-to pack and it will haul heavy loads well. Had it on 5 trips in at 68 pounds and out at 110-130 pounds. Most packs don't hold up to this kind of use. Mine still looks brand new. Full review
