Recent Expedition Pack (4,500+ cu in) Reviews

Deuter ACT Lite 75+10

rated 4 of 5 stars A great, simple, and functional backpack. The first review of this product is very accurate.  It's comfortable, durable, and a great value.  I just wanted to mention another wonderful feature: The removable top that converts into a day pack. This adds invaluable versatility. For wilderness backpacking, after establishing a base camp you can use the use the day pack for day/summit hikes without hauling the main pack around. The day pack has enough space for about day's worth of food and water,… Full review

Dana Design Stillwater

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Great pack... minimal bells and whistles. I think of it as a "sack with a flap." In 2000 I re-walked Colin Fletcher's 1000 Mile Summer. This was my pack and it served me very well (and still does). I see that Dana is still using some of the old pack designs in his Mystery Ranch products. If I ever wear this one out I will give MR products a look. The only complaint I have is, it's a heavy pack when empty. That being said, I still think a lighter weight pack may have never lasted this long... it… Full review

Tika Cardrona

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I looked at both the Fairydown and Macpac alternatives, but this had a better detachable daypack. Twenty years later I'm still really happy with it. Fairydown eventually bought Tika, and so that was the end of that :( Full review

Mystery Ranch NICE 6500

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This big hauler is for winter expeditions, bulky gear, and heavy loads. It's built like a Sherman tank and you could probably carry a "Deuce and a half" in it. If you're into S&M you can hurt yourself with this pack. Seriously, you can load it with more than you can carry. I bought the pack two years ago. My first trip with it was nearly a year ago, the week between Christmas and New Years into the Unicoi Mountains and Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Area. I knew it would be cold. I packed all my geese. Arc'teryx Men's Naos 85

rated 4.5 of 5 stars When the forecast is for rain... this is the ticket! Though now discontinued, I expect the dead bird will bring this pack back to life. It's too good to let it go to waste. Let's start with the fact that it's virtually waterproof.  It's like a roll top dry bag. I wouldn't bet money that it's perfectly waterproof if you turned over while canoeing a river. The so-called 'waterproof' zippers would be vulnerable at the ends where the slider tucks into the "zipper garage." But, submersion is different… Full review

Osprey Xenith 105

rated 3.5 of 5 stars I just bought this pack for an Aconcagua trip coming up. I used to have a Gregory Denali Pro (from 2005) which is durable as can be. Still early in evaluation, but this pack is a lot more comfortable than the old Gregory—better hip support and shoulder straps work great too. Only negative so far is the water bottle holders. They are not really accessible unless you put the pack down, which means no drinking unless you stop. That's a negative for me. Still trying to see if there is a workaround. Full review

Gregory Baltoro 75

rated 4 of 5 stars A good beginner pack that is durable and well made. A good beginner pack that is durable and well made... Fit: The pack when fitted well is very comfortable to wear. I wore it backpacking into the Grand Canyon and it served me well. Comfort: Very comfortable to wear. Once on, I almost forget it is there. Capacity: When going into a reseller they advised me that the capacity of all sizes were the same and that is not true. The large is 75 liters, the medium 73 liters, and the small 71 liters. This… Full review

Gregory Forester

rated 5 of 5 stars Used it for ten years and easily the most comfortable pack I have ever known in over 50 years of packing. I have never put a load in it which it could not carry comfortably. I have a very short torso, but fit is perfect. No problems carrying for ten hours even though I have lower back problems. I like the simplicity and the fact that it limits carrying unnecessary stuff. Only one wish is detachable pockets for those times you need them—but not often. Full review

Kifaru Tactical Platform Frame and Suspension

rated 5 of 5 stars This is a pack frame that you can carry anything that your legs can lift in, comfortably, whether it's an ultralight sil-nylon bag, firewood, or your friend who sprained an ankle. My configurations vary from a 2000 cubic inch day pack, rifle, and a cargo panel for meat, to a dry bag with an 8-man tipi, wood stove, and gear for me and my two kids. This pack is for those that want the ability to carry really heavy loads easily. Great for military, hunting, or all around backpacking, with the capability… Full review
