Kelty Red Cloud 90

rated 4 of 5 stars A heavy hitter. This is my main pack for short or long trips into the wilderness and you will find this pack on my back up until this year. The weight is 5lbs, but was never a problem. Great for hunting, multi-day to multi-week long trips. Comfortable with plenty of detail. This was my fourth or so pack and I was very pleased with this pack. The weight is 5lbs, but was not felt when hiking around on the Appalachian Trail. This pack easily suits the needs of week or multi-week long trips. The pockets… Full review

JanSport Bhutan

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Versatile travel bag, simple minimalist design, okay for weekend backpacking trips, nice main pack/daypack combo. Took this bag with me on trips to Greece and Turkey and Tanzania, the Caribbean and Japan, as well as backpacking trips in Texas. A great travel bag, the ability to tuck the straps in and convert it to a suitcase configuration was nice for keeping the straps from getting caught on stuff when checking it on flights, and when checking into nicer hotels that don't cater to the backpacking… Full review

Granite Gear Nimbus Trace Access 85

rated 5 of 5 stars My favorite pack for heavy loads. I owned and enjoyed using a 2012 Baltoro 75 for four years before discovering the Nimbus Trace. The maple frame fits me better so I've used this pack since 2016. Carries heavy loads comfortably because frame fits my back perfectly! Definitely try it on for fit. Lots of straps to cinch down loads so nothing shifts. Cordura fabric holds up really well, virtually scratch/tear-proof. Lots of customizable options in shoulder strap and hip-belts sizes. I use large shoulder… Full review

Kelty Red Cloud 6650

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A comfortable pack that never seems to run out of space! I would recommend this pack (or one of its smaller sibling packs) for backpackers who prefer comfort over light weight (both in the pack itself and with the gear they take). The Kelty 6650 is a high-capacity loader and allows me to take anything and everything! I've been using it for more than 10 years now. While I don't generally have the opportunity to go on more than one backpacking trip per year, the trip is normally for 3-4 days, and… Full review

Kelty Red Cloud 110

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The only fault I find is that the extra daypack's strap is not removable. Otherwise, we were very happy to take two of these into the Boundary Waters for a week this summer. There is plenty of room for all of our lightweight gear and the pass-through sides were great for our rods to be kept safe during portage. Fit both of our frames very well with the adjustable straps. I'm 5'7" and the husband is 6'3". Full review

U.S. Military CFP 90

rated 4 of 5 stars Another fine military item that has already been reviewed on Trailspace. I just wanted to back up what's already been said. I'll cover the camo colors, negative aspect of large-capacity, and some low costs. I'm 6 feet, 2 inches tall and the CPU-90 fits me well. I'm a Leave No Trace Master Educator in southeast New Mexico and I use this pack and the Marine Corps MARPAT pack when I teach the LNT Trainers Course (the Trainers Course is not a backpacking class but a certification class for LNT trainers… Full review

The North Face Fusion

rated 5 of 5 stars 20 years on...still a great pack! I still use it all the time. It's extremely durable so I can't imagine what brainchild was doing to it in 2002 to kill it so quickly. No issues. Fantastic backpack. Full review

Gregory Baltoro 85

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great pack, comfy, packs a ton and super durable. Have had mine for going on two years and I've abused it without running into any issues. It's also super easy to customize, gear stows are intuitive and extremely functional. I would recommend this pack for anyone who is OK with making the tradeoff of weight for utility. Only have two real gripes. First is the waterproof hip-pouch is not large enough to stash a GPS device (e.g. DeLorme) or a smartphone; and second is that the hanging mechanism for… Full review

Gregory Baltoro 85

rated 4.5 of 5 stars That great Gregory fit and quality. This is a freighter pack that fits like a glove. I typically carry 55- to 70-lb loads and I've tried a few other brands, but none match Gregory for comfort and stability with big loads. The padding is firm and doesn't bottom-out under big loads. The bag design and suspension combine to keep the load stable and close to my back. The waist belt anchors the load solidly to my hips without having to reef on it. The pockets and water bottle pouch are really well designed… Full review
