OMeals Brown Rice, Quinoa & Lentils

rated 3 of 5 stars It's good food, heats very well, but despite company claims as the backpacking food that'll change backpacking, each meal is so heavy that they are really only good for activities like canoeing/rafting, day hiking, car camping. I stopped by REI Albuquerque to get some food for an additional setup week at my camp at Burning Man.  I got items from Mountain House, Backpacker's Pantry, etc and they had something new, self-heating OMeals, so I bought eight meals. They are ready-to-eat, not freeze-dried… Full review

Mountain House Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

rated 4 of 5 stars Crave it, even when at home. This is by far one of our favorite meals. The flavor is excellent. As with many of these meals, we add a little extra water and usually let it sit a bit longer than instructed. If you don't want to gamble on a flavor, this one is recommended. Full review

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Excellent, easy to use. The VIA packs are perfect for backcountry coffee. Tiny packaging—simply add to hot water, stir, and enjoy. Not a ton I can say other than it's good and much appreciated on a cold morning.   Full review

Heather's Choice Strawberry Vanilla Breakfast

rated 5 of 5 stars Tasty, healthy breakfast. Found at random online. Smaller outfit that specializes in backcountry meals. Gave it a try on my last adventure and was very impressed by the taste and homemade quality. Having visited the website to consider future meals, it's obvious the gal who owns and operates is very skilled, not only in food prep, but in backpacking. Will definitely try again. Full review

Mountain House Beef Stroganoff with Noodles

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent backcountry meal! My favorite of the Mountain House variety. Have sampled 4-5 different offerings, this being the overwhelming favorite. Honestly, it's really good. Part of that is that I could eat anything after a day of hiking, but the flavor is nice. From reading forums over the years, I'm not alone in declaring this one of the better dehydrated, readily available options. I don't have the time or talents to prepare a fancy meal, so I lean on these for sustenance. Never been disappointed… Full review

Backpacker's Pantry Chicken Cashew Curry

rated 2 of 5 stars Pretty bad. Will not buy again. I love the Mountain House staples (Lasagna, Chili Mac, Stroganoff), but I'm always looking for something different. Problem is MH has meat that is sized to how you'd cook at home, while Backpackers Pantry has these tiny little diced cubes; there's no comparison. BP does package its meals well though; rounded corners and less air than MH. (I poke holes with a pin in MH meals to remove the air and then tape over them. Also I cut off the corner points to keep the from… Full review

Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna

rated 5 of 5 stars I’m a big fan of Wild Planet Tuna for backpacking lunches because of the excellent flavor, texture, ingredient list, and nutrition profile. Add to that, their sustainable fishing practices and it’s a winner. Tuna packets are a popular foundation for backpacker lunches, providing needed calories and protein. The Mylar packages are relatively convenient in the backcountry, being single serve and shelf stable. I’ve regarded them as a treat due to their weight, but as I’ve tired of other lunch… Full review

Organic Valley Organic Fuel Whey Protein Powder

rated 5 of 5 stars Organic Fuel Whey Protein Powder tastes good, doesn’t have a chalky taste, and adds needed protein to my backpacking diet. I wasn’t looking for protein powder, but when Organic Fuel Whey Protein Powder, made by Organic Valley, landed on my doorstep, I discovered that I liked it. The flavor is good, it doesn’t have a chalky taste, and it adds needed protein to my backpacking diet. Protein powder is one of those products that never hit my radar. There are a few reasons. I’m an omnivore, so… Full review

Clif Hot Chocolate Bar

rated 1 of 5 stars Appealing packaging and presentation cannot make up for a flavorless sawdust. Hands down the worst Clif Bar I have tried. With the holidays fast approaching Clif Bar, will soon be rolling out its seasonal flavors. So I thought this would be a good time to warn you away from trying the "Hot Chocolate" flavored bar. At my local REI, I grabbed an impulse item at the checkout. Who could blame me when the packaging looks so festive! The packaging was appropriate as I was hiking and camping near Jackson… Full review
