For the novice or the expert this is an awesome GPS unit. You get a ton of features for the price. It's the smallest and lightest weight GPS I have ever used and the price is amazing. The downside is the onboard built-in maps are not very detailed once you zoom in several times. I suggest getting a Topographical MicroSD expansion card to supplement the onboard maps.

With a 256-color screen and microSD memory card expandability, calling the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx a basic handheld is like calling a Giant Redwood just a tree. You can buy microSD cards preloaded with BlueChart ocean charts and MapSource topographic maps, or use your own blank cards to store tons of info. The Venture Cx's bright color screen and high resolution display work fine in sunlight, and Garmin improved the battery life so you won't get stranded in the backcountry with a useless, plastic brick when you need a map.
