MacroBars, with their natural, macrobiotic and minimally processed ingredients offers an alternative to processed energy bars or sugary candy bars filled with unpronounceable ingredients. The bars are made with a variety of flavors such as chocolate, banana, coconut and berries mixed in a base of peanut, almond or sunflower butter. The organic vegan bars are compact, flavorful and free of gluten, soy and dairy.

I found the texture to be somewhat dense and chewy like firm cookie dough. It’s easy to bite off and is digestible even during a big hike. The taste is clean and bright with distinctive fruit and nut flavors. My favorite flavors were the ones with fruit, including Sweet Revival with sesame butter and dates, and Sunny Uplift with cherries and berries.

The two-ounce bars have around 250 calories or more. Some have a lot of protein, with 10-12 grams of protein, compared to the regular bars which have around four grams. When I'm on a long backpacking trip of more than a week I pay attention to my diet to make sure I'm getting enough protein and these are a good supplement.

High protein bars include Prolonged Power, with banana and almond butter, Protein Paradise, with cashew caramel and Protein Replenishment, with peanut butter. The slender size of the bars makes them a good size to slip in my pocket or pack. Eleven flavors are available including five high protein bars.

Thrive bars are a new offering that are loaded with seeds and grains (sunflower, pumpkin, hemp, quinoa and sprouted flax). I like the Almond Apricot and Chocolate Sea Salt flavors the best. These bars have more texture and have 190 calories and 7 grams of protein per bar.

I don't follow a strict vegan or gluten-free diet but I like MacroBars because they are a healthy alternative to processed snacks. The organic ingredients taste good and the bars are easily digestible while working out or hiking.
