Rather than relying on aluminum stays to provide structure for the pack, Granite Gear uses a molded carbon fiber back piece. Since this piece is very rigid, I find it transfers more weight to the hips. The pack is the most comfortable I've ever carried. Though it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a Gregory or Mountainsmith, it's really a well made, bombproof pack.
