Recent Hard Shell Jacket Reviews

Patagonia Super Pluma Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Great all around jacket, built for anything. Will keep you dry. I bought this jacket for backpacking, but after a couple uses, it became my everything jacket. Quickly replaced my go-to ski jacket, found myself wearing it for chilly bike rides, short little strolls through the woods, kayaking and canoeing in the spring and fall. Extremely windproof and waterproof, and with its light weight there is really no reason not to bring it along. The first time I took it out on a trip, 65 degree temps dropped… Full review

Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Rain Suit

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Great lightweight rain suit, but material was not very durable. I purchased this set for a Boy Scout camping trip about a year ago. They were 14 dollars at Walmart, which seemed like a good deal. It comes with its own little storage pouch and they fold down really small and lightweight so packing them in a backpack is easy.   The outer material is some sort of plastic like a tyvek suit. It does a good job of keeping the rain off of you, but without any sort of vents built in you quickly start to… Full review

Rab Flashpoint Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars In point, this jacket is all one needs for a fast and light, fully protected hardshell. See detailed review below. Testing: I tested the Flashpoint Jacket in the best backyard a guy can ask for: Glacier National Park. Scrambling peaks, backcountry ski missions where weight was to be kept at a minimum. It was my go-to shell and my only means of protection from wind/water/snow. Only other thing I'd bring was a good insulated piece. Sizing/Fit: I am a slightly 145 pounds and 5'10" guy, which seems… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Men's Exposure II Parka

rated 3 of 5 stars Great waterproofing and an overall good shell, but after less than six months one of the chest zippers ripped. Not something you expect when you pay $280 for a shell. REI took it back and gave me store credit, but by then the shell was out of stock. So, you either pay more for the Arc'teryx shell or buy a store brand. Disappointed in the quality overall. Poor workmanship. Expected more for the price.  Full review

Stoic Vaporshell 3L Anorak

rated 4 of 5 stars Great wp/b shell, usually at an affordable price Fit & Comfort: I purchased a medium, my typical size, which I found to be a bit on the slim side and a little shorter than I would have expected, the sleeves are more than adequate length for me. I've worn it comfortably in the rain and in windy weather. It is an effort to slip on due to the slim fit and half zipper. Unzipping the side zipper makes getting it on and off easier, though. Adjustability: There is a draw cord around the waist and in… Full review

Outdoor Research Men's Helium II Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Now my go-to trail running and tramping jacket. A great performer. This is a great jacket. I'm 6'3" and 110kgs (242 lbs). Naturally I wear the xl.  It is long enough in the arms and still allows some room in the body. The hood fits well and has a handy pull cord at the back to ensure a good fit. It's a functional garment. It has one not particularly useful pocket at the chest and another internal pocket which doubles as the stuff sack. It is designed to be minimalist and it works perfectly for… Full review

Sierra Designs Elite Cagoule

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Simple, lightweight, packable, and good ventilation. I have yet to find any real negative to the Elite Cagoule (6.5 oz.). It is lightweight, without zippers or pockets. The unique design allows for excellent air flow through the torso, as well as the upper legs and crotch when paired with the Sierra Designs Elite Chaps. The Cagoule also gives you quick access to pants and shirt pockets. If you are looking for lightweight rain wear that works hard at keeping you dry inside and out, check the Cagoule… Full review

Columbia Men's Pour Osity Stretch Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Very light and breathable jacket. A fantastic alternative to a Gore jacket. This is a fantastic lightweight jacket. Quite durable feeling and the fit is excellent (6'2", 185lbs, Medium does it). Didn't even notice it was raining out today. It layers perfectly with TurboDown 650, and I'm excited to wear the combo next winter! Full review

Luke's Ultralite Silnylon Rain Shell

rated 4 of 5 stars A superb, truly waterproof and lightweight rain jacket. I had Luke add two hand pockets, adjustable wrist cuffs, and pit zips for venting and it still weighs only 5.1 ounces and stuffs into the stuff sack provided (or one of the pockets). I've owned a couple different silnylon rain jackets over the years, but they all had two weaknesses that caused me to not wear them very much: condensation (lack of venting) and no hand pockets. I didn't like sacrificing comfort and convenience for what I felt… Full review
