Recent Hard Shell Jacket Reviews

Columbia Men's Pour Osity Stretch Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Very light and breathable jacket. A fantastic alternative to a Gore jacket. This is a fantastic lightweight jacket. Quite durable feeling and the fit is excellent (6'2", 185lbs, Medium does it). Didn't even notice it was raining out today. It layers perfectly with TurboDown 650, and I'm excited to wear the combo next winter! Full review

Luke's Ultralite Silnylon Rain Shell

rated 4 of 5 stars A superb, truly waterproof and lightweight rain jacket. I had Luke add two hand pockets, adjustable wrist cuffs, and pit zips for venting and it still weighs only 5.1 ounces and stuffs into the stuff sack provided (or one of the pockets). I've owned a couple different silnylon rain jackets over the years, but they all had two weaknesses that caused me to not wear them very much: condensation (lack of venting) and no hand pockets. I didn't like sacrificing comfort and convenience for what I felt… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Ampato Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Ampato Jacket is a versatile hardshell using Mountain Hardwear's Dry.Q Elite technology. It's waterproof and durable and holds up well climbing and backpacking. Fabric: The Ampato jacket is a 2-layer shell using Mountain Hardwear's high end Dry.Q Elite technology. The fabric is waterproof and breathable and also durable. I've worn this pack while climbing a dihedral and there was no wear from putting my shoulder and back against the rock as I shimmied my way up the climb. One thing to note,… Full review

Columbia Men's Sleeker Rain Jacket

rated 4 of 5 stars A lightweight, breathable/waterproof jacket, durable enough for three-season use. Ideal for the budget conscious. Conditions: I received this jacket in late November 2014 and have worn it whenever reasonably possible: multiple light rain hikes with a pack; three ~2-mile hikes in heavy rain (one with day-pack, two without); a full day of consistent, moderate rain while hunting; and even in warm winter days (40+°F) with no rain but where a light jacket was needed to break small amounts of wind. My… Full review

Rab Muztag Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars In the spirit of full disclosure, (and to follow the Trailspace review rules!) it is important to note that I am an employee for the Rab brand. That being said, I am sincerely stoked on the Muztag Jacket! When I picked up the Rab Muztag Jacket I was looking to add a very lightweight, but truly protective shell to my arsenal. I had been working with an old eVent shell that didn’t fit quite right, and was debating between the Myriad NeoShell or the eVent Muztag, and I’m glad I landed on the Muztag. Full review

Marmot Men's PreCip Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Great lightweight cheap rain jacket. Fantastic rain jacket. So much so that after losing my first one a month ago, I have just forked out for a replacement. I have also $400 eVent jacket sitting in my cupboard and use it for day to day wear.   I picked the Precip as I really wanted a jacket made from breathable material and that's properly vented. I have walked in the rain just in a t-shirt all too often because of overheating. This jacket solved that problem and at a reasonable price. Full review

ECWCS Gen I Parka

rated 4 of 5 stars A rugged, no-frills hardshell parka that will take whatever you can dish out. They're absolutely and completely waterproof, from several years of firsthand experience. The below-the-waist length gives complete coverage when bending, reaching, or sitting, and the hood is compatible with helmets the same size as or smaller than a GI Kevlar helmet. The Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) is a system of various articles of clothing designed to replace existing cold weather clothing articles,… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Minalist Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Minalist Jacket incorporates the latest Dry Q Elite fabric ,which keeps you dry inside. Asymmetric full length zipper and short expansion zipper keeps the chin protected from abrasion with enough room for a baklava. Best use for resort or back country skiing. Highly recommended. Overall view with left chin zipper open Showing internal hood pulls running outside into hood; also chamois lined chin flap. Adjusters are hidden in the hood at the top of the collar.  You adjust by pinching the adjuster… Full review

The North Face Fuse Uno Jacket

rated 4 of 5 stars The North Face Fuseform Uno is a lightweight (12oz), 3-layer HyVent Alpha, alpine designed shell which boasts an industry changing innovation dubbed FuseForm. In brief, it allows for different weights of a material to be woven into a single fabric without the use of seams or stitching. This single piece is then folded, paper airplane style, into a jacket. The fit, and strategic added durability, in the upper torso, hood and shoulders are all major pros, while there are some omissions such as pit… Full review
