Recent Hard Shell Pant Reviews

Arc'teryx LEAF Alpha Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars The Arc'teryx LEAF Alpha LT Pants are top-of-the-line hardshell pants with well-thought-out features and unbeatable performance. Primarily designed for the military/law enforcement tactical community, the Alpha LT takes what was best about the Arc'teryx light hardshell line and improved on it. This hardshell is extremely lightweight, packable, and durable making it well-suited for the backpacking community. The LEAF Alpha LT Pants are of unmatched quality when compared to other commercial or military-grade… Full review

Columbia Rain Tech Omni Heat Pants

rated 4 of 5 stars Live in WA where we get a lot of bad weather. Bought to go with my jacket of the same brand and was extremely impressed with the performance. Priced great, very functional, no frills. Lets start with the only con I could come up with. I put this under the cons because for some people this is a must. Especially when climbing a mountain where crampons are needed, would require too much time and effort to put on and take off. But this is one of the features I didn't want because of the wet weather… Full review

Log House Designs Gore-Tex Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars The best lightweight, affordable, tough 3-layer pants ever. Buy one size up instead of complaining about moving-fit problems like a city slicker. I had two pairs of these over years and made snow with both of them (a brutal job on equipment). Neither of them ever leaked and any clown who ever says their products leak is without any experience. These were tough and comfortable to wear all the time like any good 3-layer Gore tex but with a tough taslan shell which is decent in brush and the tighter… Full review

Norrona Men's Falketind Gore-Tex Pro Shell Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars The Norrona Gore-Tex Pro Shell Pant is super light and has a perfect cut. The Norrona Gore-Tex Pro Shell Pant is super light and has a perfect cut. It fit's all around the legs and is not too tight. It's not the best for skiing, but the best for all kind of climbing. It allows a huge opportunity in movement, because of the great fit and stretch in the knees. The material feel ultra durable. There are reinforcements on the inner legs and knees. It's not krepotec, but this pant is ultra light though. Full review

ZPacks Waterproof Breathable Cuben Fiber Rain Pants

rated 4.5 of 5 stars These pants are great! I don't usually carry rain pants for summer hikes in dry climates, but for a few ounces these pants saved my bacon in the abnormally stormy weather we experienced on the JMT this past August. I wore them for hiking in rain at high elevation and also around camp and at night in the tent for extra warmth. These pants are worth every penny of the $160 I paid for them. They are so light and small that I don't hesitate to throw them in my pack "just in case". The three layer laminate… Full review

The North Face Men's Mountain Light Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars These pants exceeded my expectations. They were light, durable, and dried quick after getting wet. Well worth the money! The fit and comfort of these pants were great. The only exception is I wished they offered in between sizes in the waist. They were perfect for camping, and I will be buying another pair soon. They dried very quickly after getting wet, and were very cool in the heat. Full review

Marmot Alpinist Bib

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great fit! Zippers snag easily. I use this product for ski touring and it's great! Very durable and the fit is great. The only issue is that zippers along the legs snag easily. I'm 6'3" 200lbs and wear the xl! Full review

REI Men's Kimtah Rain Pants

rated 4 of 5 stars Tough, waterproof, windproof, warm, fully-featured rain pants. I use them for snowshoeing and other cold season activities in the Oregon Cascades. I bought these at a used-gear sale. They had a small tear low on one leg that was easily repaired with Tenacious Tape and I've used them for two years now with no problems. They fit very well and are amazingly adjustable, with a comfortable waist, nice deep secure pockets, an inner gaiter, articulated knees, and a lower leg zippers that allow easy on/off… Full review

Arc'teryx Men's Beta AR Pant

rated 5 of 5 stars These rain paints work well in all conditions. The Gore-tex Pro shell has excellent breathability. The pants are durable and well constructed. The built-in gaiters keep out snow and mud. The coated zippers keep water out and allow added ventilation if needed. These pants are keep out driving rain and snow and are the best all around outerwear for travel in wet and cold conditions. The pants keep you warm in camp and breath on the trail — layering is easily accomplished as the pants are large enough… Full review
