Black Diamond Icon

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great, rugged light. Lasts for 100's of hours on high-med diffuse beam using rechargeable batteries (longer on lithiums of course). I've had good luck with Black Diamond headlamps. I bought the Gemini back around 2002 and that lasted almost 10 years before the battery case finally cracked enough to let rain in... I've had the Icon since around 2012 and it still looks pretty new. It gets almost nightly use while I go feed my livestock. I've used it on weeknight hikes in the pouring rain without any… Full review

Petzl Tikka R+

rated 5 of 5 stars The Petzl Tikka R+ is a high-end yet affordable headlamp option, ideal for the night crawler. It's rechargeable lithium-ion powered, reactive high output LED beam will ensure safe passage on the trail after the sun goes down. The weight and balance of the R+ is supported by a super comfortable easy adjust elastic band. While not exactly sleek, the headlamp is not cumbersome, and would surely satisfy outdoor enthusiast illumination needs on the trail. The Tikka R+ is best used for trail use. While… Full review

Princeton Tec Apex

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This headlamp is a good buy. It works very well for night hiking and navigation. The spot beam is useful for route finding, and the flood is very nice. The spot beam on this headlamp has a really good range, about 300' or so, and is plenty bright enough to navigate at night. It does drain the batteries though, and can use them up in about an hour, so I only use the spot when I need to see something far away. For the rest of the time, the flood is almost perfect on this light, and does nicely. Usually,… Full review

Petzl MYO 5

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Though heavy by today's standards, this headlamp lasts forever and never breaks. I have been using this lamp for 4 years now. I have a lighter lamp but I keep going back to the Myo. The 5 LED setting lasts an extremely long time. I change the batteries out maybe 3 times a year and use it for night hikes at least once a month and I use it at home all the time. The 4 AA batteries can power the small LEDs forever. The halogen setting draws a lot of energy and is only good for about 4 hours or so. I'm… Full review

Mammut X-Shot Headlamp

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Hard use headlamp that stands the test of time in all manner of conditions. Good for canoeing in dark conditions, close up work, and hiking. Recommended for those who are serious about night movement. I purchased this over six years ago in Alaska for use while duck hunting. Since then, it's been used lots of times in all types of weather (wet, cold, wet and cold, hot, you name it!). It has decent battery life and throws a great spot -— so good in fact that you can use it for night / early morning… Full review

Petzl TacTikka XP

rated 5 of 5 stars Bought it for its tiny size, partial power settings, wide and narrow beams. I've had it for several years now. Every summer I spend three or more months in tents, and use it at least half an hour every single day. Batteries last so long that I forget whether I have changed them that season or the previous one. In 2015, this Tikka XP is now "the old model", but still delivering as the first day. A great flashlight that I can also use as headlamp 50% of the time. I walk around mostly during the day,… Full review

Princeton Tec Vizz

rated 1 of 5 stars Why do the batteries routinely go dead after just a few hours? The first Vizz I owned seemed to have an electrical short -- why else would the battery go dead so quickly? So I called Princeton Tec to report the problem and they graciously agreed to have me send it back to them. They soon sent me another -- and the life of the batteries is equally poor: maybe 2 hours of use, and now the red light indicating low battery life is flashing. The problem with the burn time negates any redeeming qualities… Full review

Princeton Tec Apex

rated 5 of 5 stars A great headlamp. Waterproof battery pack a key feature. A really good product. Got it for under $50 on Sierra Trading. Store without batteries to prevent leakage. Full review

Panther Vision LED Lighted Cap

rated 5 of 5 stars PowerCaps or Visors merge the cap and head lamp, eliminating weight from your pack. Great battery life. I always wear a cap or visor when I hit the trail and, of course, always need a headlamp. Power caps combine the two and allows you to eliminate a head lamp from your pack its base weight. Battery life is long and you wouldn't know the light is part of the cap.  It does use two CR2032 batteries which are easily found at home but maybe not a "trail town." Spares are much lighter than AA's or AAA's. … Full review
