I have owned three pairs of Herman Survivors from Walmart in the past few years. I have had none of the problems mentioned in terms of soles falling off or otherwise falling apart. I have taken them on several week to 10-day backpacking trips in Ga, NC, and many 1-2 nighters in FL as well as day hikes 3-4 times a week.
Waterproofing might be a bit suspect on my first pair but overall I have been satisfied. Perhaps there was an earlier quality control problem which has since been rectified.
