Recent Hiking/Backpacking Sock Reviews

DeFeet Blaze

rated 5 of 5 stars Don't let the name put you off, these socks can be worn all year round, but especially stand out in the colder months. An all around great sock. I've used this sock in a variety of outdoor pursuits in a variety of weather conditions with a variety of shoes/boots and the one constant in each situation was the quality and high-performance of this sock. Overview and Conditions:  I came across these socks late last year at my local bike shop. Why they were carrying a trail sock was a bit surprising… Full review

Darn Tough Merino Micro Crew Sock Cushion

rated 5 of 5 stars The difference between fresh caught shrimp from the ocean and popcorn shrimp at a fast food joint. I recently got turned on to Darn Tough socks and I have zero hesitation in saying I will never buy another brand again. Putting these on for the first time was as if the master sock artist, Leonardo DaSockio, had painted them on my feet. Not only was there absolutely zero bunching on the trail, but my feet stayed dry (very unusual for me), they provided the perfect amount of cushion and I didn't need… Full review

Injinji Trail 2.0 Midweight Mini-Crew

rated 4.5 of 5 stars These socks are great for hiking! I love these socks! They fit perfectly and really do help prevent blisters. I got some terrible blisters on my toes and the balls of my feet on a 20-mile backpacking trip early this summer and subsequently bought these socks. I did the same hike last weekend and I did not re-blister my feet even though I was carrying even more weight this time! The socks are comfortable, moisture-wicking, and stretchy. They have a tighter, stretchy area in the middle that really… Full review

SmartWool Men's Hiking Ultra Light Mini

rated 4 of 5 stars After dismissing this sock as sub-par, I have a new found appreciation of them. They are not a great hiking sock, but they are pretty decent for running and cycling. I have own this sock for more than a year. On my first backpacking trip with it, I wrote it off as a bad purchase. The reason for this was the low cut did not work well with a light hiker (like my Merrell Moab Ventilator pictured here). Shortly into a hike, especially in wet conditions, the top of the sock is below the back of the shoe,… Full review

SmartWool Men's Hiking Ultra Light Mini

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Not worth the money. I picked up two pairs of these for cheap, and if it didn't cost more than they are worth to send them back, I probably would. First, I'll have to admit I didn't plan on using them for hiking. I want taller socks for hiking anyways. These were just to be casual wool socks. I LOVE SmartWool PhD running and outdoor socks (light mini and light micro are amazing), but these are thick, hot, and not tightly woven like the PhD. Much much hotter, cause my feet to sweat, even in the cold,… Full review

Injinji Performance Crew Sock

rated 4 of 5 stars Used as a liner sock with a pair of mid-weight merino wool hikers, I found the Injinji Performance Crew to be exactly what I need for blister free hiking/backpacking. While not the most durable socks, I am pleased enough with them to have purchased a second pair. Conditions of Testing: My Injinji Performance Crew Socks were used as liner socks with a pair of SmartWool PhD Run Medium Mini Socks on an 6-day, 85-mile hike along the River-to-River Trail in Shawnee National Forest in early April 2014. Full review

WrightSock Coolmesh II Crew Sock

rated 5 of 5 stars A blister-free guarantee that I have tested and found to be true. It seems like the minute I let my guard down and forget to wear decent socks or stop to dry my feet I will earn a stern reminder from my heel in the form of a blister. In the same way that each new summer earns me that first sunburn each hiking season gets me, if I am not careful, a new blister. After my gentle reminder I usually resort back to wearing a light liner sock under my normal hiking socks and this works but Wrightsock has… Full review

Darn Tough Merino Boot Sock Full Cushion

rated 5 of 5 stars Lifetime socks. I was given a pair of Darn Tough Hike/Trek socks about five years ago with the purchase of a pair of Zamberlan 760 Steep hiking boots and I've never looked back. They are the only socks I wear for anything — period. From the label I see they are made of 69% Merino Wool, 27% Nylon, and 4% Lycra Spandex. On the back of the package is says Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee.  "If you can wear these socks out, we'll replace them. Free of charge. No questions asked. For life. When you're… Full review

Dahlgren Women's Alpaca Hiking Sock

rated 5 of 5 stars These are the perfect socks for hiking! I love the snug feeling, without being over-tight. They have a supportive feel over the arch. Never stretch out. Even when wet, they remain warm without making the feet sweat. I own several styles of Dahlgren alpaca socks, would recommend them all, except the short anklet style. The short anklet style runs small, tends to slide off the foot. Full review
