Recent Internal Frame Backpack Reviews

GoLite Jam 70L

rated 5 of 5 stars A very well designed, ultralight frameless pack at an affordable price. Since reducing my base load weight to under 20 pounds (including a 5 lb. CPAP), I decided to try an ultralight backpack. I have been using a Kelty Trekker 65 and a Yukon 48 for years, and never expected to find a lighter pack that was capable of handling my necessarily bulky load with the same amount of comfort. After taking the Jam 70 on an overnight hike, I was not disappointed in its simplicity, comfort, capacity, and compressibility. Full review

Klymit Motion 60

rated 3 of 5 stars The Motion 60 is a lightweight, large capacity backpack built around the Airbeam Framesheet, that Klymit has become famous for. Its best features are the cavernous hipbelt and water bottle pockets, the Airbeam technology and the layout of the pack. It is however, way oversized for an UL pack and suffers from excess in many areas. It would be best for someone needing a large sized pack without the need to haul big loads. Specs (from Klymit): Weight: 2.6 lbs/ 1.18 kg Volume: 55L +5L pocket Waist Size:… Full review

Gregory Z55

rated 5 of 5 stars I have used this pack for the last four years in the Southeast primarily. Great comfort, load carrying, and ventilation at a relatively low weight. This is my primary pack for weekend to week long trips. It has the capacity, if you have the right gear, for a winter week trip, at least here in the mid Atlantic and South. At just over 3 lbs, it is on the heavy side for a lightweight pack, but every time I consider going lighter or ultralight the comfort and back ventilation bring me back. I have lower… Full review

REI Mars 80

rated 5 of 5 stars You can disappear for seven days with this very comfortable pack without leaving any gear behind. Great Pack. I have used this on a 50-mile trip hiking the north loop in Glacier National Park and a 38-mile trip on the AT in North Carolina. I carried six days worth of food on both trips. I tend to bring  a lot of unnecessary gear, chairs, hammock, electronics, and a big first aid kit. The Glacier trip I carried 65 pounds without discomfort and had to scramble a couple of times. Pack feels like a… Full review

ROKK Flat Iron

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Not really that well made, blew out the zipper on the top cover pouch on day 1. Okay, we attached it with carabiners for the remainder of the trip. Not really comfortable for anything over 40 pounds, lightly built shoulder straps cut into you. Not intended for "big guys". Good weekend pack if you set up a base camp and don't have to carry this everywhere you go. Received this pack as a gift, Fit: Uncomfortable for a large shouldered guy. Capacity: Okay for a weekend trip, wouldn't put anything more… Full review

Kelty Unisex PK 50

rated 3 of 5 stars Innovative new design has promise, but needs refinement. I really wanted to like this back because of its innovative design, lack of any zippers, and organizational features. But unfortunately the uncomfortable suspension system kept me from doing so. I will start with the pack bag itself; it is a 50 liter which can be downsized to 35 liters by removing the exterior pocket. The outside pocket was one of the features I liked because it could hold all my clothing in the lower section and all of… Full review

Osprey Aether 70

rated 5 of 5 stars The most awesome pack I've ever owned. Ten plus in design, weight, and comfort. I've used this pack for weekend trips and week long trips. It is the most comfortable pack I have ever owned. My only disappointment is that I didn't purchase earlier! It fits extremely well and conforms to my body very well. It's very light. The Aether 70 is versatile in that it can be used for a weekend backpacking trip as well as a week long trip (though you need to pack well for a week long trip). There are plenty… Full review

Mountainsmith Lookout 50

rated 5 of 5 stars This isn't an ultralight pack by any means, but it's a great pack for weekend warriors or extended trip backpackers who want to go minimalist and leave the excess behind. It's a great compromise — not a monster pack, but capable of carrying heavy loads when you need it to (loaded with climbing gear, rope, etc) and capable of expanding to carry more if you overstuff the main bag. It's stable and durable. This pack lacks some of the flashy features offered by premium brands, but it really does offer… Full review

Gregory Z65

rated 5 of 5 stars Fit, comfort, and space make this my "Go To" pack. Here goes...I have owned this pack and used it well for the last 4-5 years. It has been on the Appalachian Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and various other regional trails from the East Coast to the Rockies. Without fail this has been the best pack I have ever owned. I went in to Campmor (Paramus, N.J.) to purchase the "sexier" Osprey Atmos 65. The salesman compelled me to load up and try on the Z65. I tried so hard not to like it but the comfort,… Full review
