ECWCS Gen II Brown Bear Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars This is an old school fibre pile jacket made for extreme cold weather. It's not pretty, but it works! I purchased this item a few years ago to replace my old Borglite Pile jacket from the early 80’s. I usually wear wool, but for travelling north of the tree line I often wear pile. Pile should not be confused with fleece; they are not the same. Were as fleece resembles brushed flannel, fibre pile is more like wool shearling. However, because pile does not have a windproof backing it breathes much… Full review

RailRiders WeatherTop

rated 5 of 5 stars A highly durable, comfortable, pullover that does not restrict arm movements. I wore this piece every day for a 7-day fly fishing excursion in the Amur River Basin of the Khentii Province in Mongolia. It was great in the mid-October cold weather and wind of the Mongolian Steppe and Mongolia Siberia where we ended up. We were fly fishing with large rods and heavy streamers which requires high arm motion double haul casting. The casting motion never felt restricted and kept me comfortable and protected… Full review

RailRiders WeatherTop

rated 4 of 5 stars This is my preferred outer layer for shoulder season mountain biking. It cuts the wind when I need it to and vents when I want it to. I am never worried about abusing it hitting branches because it's so burly, yet it is light enough that I'm not bothered while wearing it. I love this jacket. I'm a hardcore proponent of windshirts as a layer of just about any system and this is a valuable one in my quiver any time I am doing something that mind find me scraping against branches or other abrasive… Full review

Woolrich Wool-Lined Mountain Parka

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great three-season outer layer. Warm, durable, water resistant. The Woolrich Mountain Parka has been a very important outer layer for me for four decades of hiking/backpacking here in northern New England where I have grown up. I have worn this parka on Mts. Washington and Katahdin during winter ascents of both. It has a water resistant outer shell of what Woolrich calls Ramar Cloth that in reality is pretty waterproof. A few weeks ago I tried out my third parka in 40 years during an all-day bushwhack… Full review

Luke's Ultralite Silnylon Rain Shell

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This is a light, packable, and well made rain jacket that is excellent for wind protection and light rain. This is a well made silnylon rain jacket that packs very small. I am 5'8" and 170 lbs. A Large fits well allowing a light fleece as a base layer.   I purchased the jacket with the pit zips and adjustable cuffs (both worth the money IMHO). The hood has a good adjustment and fits well. I have used this jacket now for three seasons, in a variety of conditions including several driving rain storms. Full review

Mountain Hardwear Men's Ghost Whisperer Hooded Down Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars A super light and deceptively warm down sweater. Moderately roomy cut allows some layering underneath. In keeping with the jacket's absurdly light weight, the nylon is extremely light, and zippers feel almost fragile. Does exactly what it is intended to do, and should be a keeper. These are my initial impressions of this down sweater, a new purchase. I'll have to wear it more to assess some aspects of how it performs. So far, I'm very pleased with it. The Weight: This jacket is so light that it… Full review

Helly Hansen Odin Minimalist Rain Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars For under 6 ounces, this rain shell makes a lightweight addition to a pack. Used as an emergency layer, it breathes as well as a waterproof jacket can and layers easily with a down jacket in the cooler months. This three-season minimalist jacket used for hiking or biking packs small, but the small size, light weight, and durability comes at a higher price than others, though will be enticing to UL backpackers. Preface: I was lucky enough to win this jacket in a Facebook contest back in August for… Full review

RailRiders WeatherTop

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I primarily use this for backcountry skiing. It is great for those early and late season days when it's way too warm to wear your winter coat. This is a remake of an old RailRiders layer brought back with some new improvements. It's a very unique piece, a soft-shell-ish pullover that does a decent job of keeping out water and an excellent job of keeping out wind. I got one for christmas last year and used it sporadically for the rest of the winter. The best use I found for this top is backcountry… Full review

Wiggy's Cagoule

rated 4 of 5 stars I own two Wiggy's bags, a bivy sack, a rain jacket, and six ecotats made by Wiggy's. All are over built and what I would call BET YOUR LIFE GEAR. The temp ratings tend to be very conservative. The #10 YKK zippers are bulky but built to last. I would not hesitate to buy Wiggy's products or give them to loved ones; they are that good. Cagoule/ rain jacket: This item is extremely well made, the seams are fully taped, and the item is overbuilt. The Cagoule would be a world beater if it was a little… Full review
