Kelty Red Cloud 110

rated 4.5 of 5 stars
photo: Kelty Red Cloud 110 expedition pack (70l+)

Comfortable HUGE rucksack that you hardly notice on your back.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Adjustable
  • Bigger than advertised

Cons

  • Chest buckle slips
  • Easy to overpack

This pack fits extremely well for the size. The way the internal frame is designed you hardly notice it. It is so comfortable in fact that I have not even had to use the hip support belt!

The advertised capacity is 110 liters but you can extend the top cover and probably get another 5 to 10 liters in there! Everything on this pack is right about where it should be and very well balanced, when climbing and leaning forward I noticed that the pack does not ride overhead like most other over-sized packs and when compartments are not in use it can compress rather efficiently and easily.

Kelty definitely made a tremendous rucksack here!

The only fault I find is that the extra daypack's strap is not removable.

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Very light for packing area
  • Comfortable on long portages/hikes

Cons

  • Cannot remove the optional daypack strap

Otherwise, we were very happy to take two of these into the Boundary Waters for a week this summer. There is plenty of room for all of our lightweight gear and the pass-through sides were great for our rods to be kept safe during portage.

Fit both of our frames very well with the adjustable straps. I'm 5'7" and the husband is 6'3".

Bought this pack for my 14 yo (6' 2") son for a one-week leadership wilderness training. He loves the weight distribution, spaciousness.

Pros

  • Great construction
  • Excellent adjustments for different body types

Cons

  • How to use the detachable fanny pack? Limited instructions.

Neither of us could figure out how to attach carry the detachable fanny pack, no instructions. So he brought an old one for day use as needed. Also few places to attach carabiner within handy reach for water, compass, etc.

Otherwise this is a great, well built, high quality piece of equipment.
