Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet

rated 4 of 5 stars Deffinately a minimalist hatchet. I'd recommend a bigger one for most real hatchet work. I'm generally a fan of large knives for wilderness tasks. You can cut, chop, split, pry and poke with them. Recently I decided that I wanted to try my hand at using a good hatchet instead, just to change things up and to see life on the other side. After a little research, I decided on the smallest hatchet from Gransfors Bruks, the mini/belt hatchet (model 410).  I think it would work well for me while backpacking,… Full review

Gerber Sliding Saw

rated 5 of 5 stars It weighs almost nothing, fits almost anywhere, and cuts almost anything (wooden). Worth its weight in gold. I've owned the Gerber Sliding Saw for a few years now, and I completely love it. I've broken a hefty inch or so off the tip of the blade from it getting snagged and kinking a few times, but most of it is still there and works like a champ. I've learned to focus more on the pulling action of the saw than the pushing, to avoid snagging and breaking more of the blade. I wouldn't call it brittle… Full review

Light My Fire Swedish FireKnife

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I received this knife as part of the 10 Essentials Reviewer of the Month prize pack. I split an A4 page holding the page with one hand and started fire very easily with the blunt side of the knife (don't laugh) to some toilet paper. The problem lies in the softness (purity maybe?) of the magnesium rod. No matter how slow I scraped the rod I couldn't get a pile of shavings as they burnt instantly. So lots of sparks but no pile to make a difference when in a difficult situation with wet tinder. Overall… Full review

Morakniv Bushcraft Survival

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Sharp, sturdy, versatile, reliable and available in different colors. This fix blade bushcraft knife is made with Swedish stainless steel with a rubber handle, it comes with a fire starter and diamond file all affixed to a protective hard sheath. You won't lose sleep over this knife with it being a fairly affordable option on any of your adventurous outings. The Morakniv Bushcraft Survival Orange This particular Morakniv Bushcraft survival knife model comes with a fitted hard sheath with a drain… Full review

Morakniv Companion Knife

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Perfect for anyone who needs a sharp fixed blade knife for basic camp kitchen and basic bushcraft chores. Backpackers will especially enjoy how lightweight this knife is. After collecting all manner of knives I have fallen in love with the Mora for basic outdoor chores. The 4.1" carbon blade is a very usefull size without being too short for many tasks or too long and too awkward to carry. Folding knives have their place but a fixed blade will always be easier to deploy and use. A fixed blade knife… Full review

Opinel No. 8 Folding Knife

rated 5 of 5 stars It's also an historical knife and the type dates back to at least the Civil War. I've used mine for Civil War and 1916 Punitive Expedition living history. It's a good knife to have and I also carry one in my ground-pounder search and rescue pack. Full review

Schrade Frontier SCHF37

rated 4 of 5 stars This is a good quality knife that's better for bushcraft and not your best choice for ultralight hiking. When I first received this knife my initial impression was that the blade was about the length I like at 6 inches (165 mm) cutting edge and it had a nice choil, but it was wider though at 1.25 inches (33 mm) edge to spine and 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick than I was used to and then there was the weight at 18 ounces. The rest of the system, hone, sheath and fire steel, brought the total weight to… Full review

Opinel No. 8 Folding Knife

rated 5 of 5 stars All around a great knife, simple and nice to look at. The knife is easy to open—not as easy as some, it does require two hands. Its simple design is what makes this knife so appealing and nice to look at, it has a very pretty real wooden handle and is simple to unlock and lock with a collar that turns to lock the blade open or closed.  These famous peasant knives from France have a single high-carbon steel blade that folds into a hardwood handle (Beechwood I think). Being a high carbon blade… Full review

Sven 21-Inch Blade

rated 5 of 5 stars Ever see a camp gadget that you just had to have? If not, then check this saw out, by far the best saw on the market. Had mine for over two years and it has never let me down. I first saw this saw on a backpacking trip to Panthertown Valley. I used my swiss army knife for years. I normally go by the "burn nothing bigger than your wrist" rule. But after seeing this saw in action, I knew I had to have one. It easier to use than a traditional bow saw. At 1lb 1oz it's lighter than a bowsaw. And the… Full review
