L.L.Bean Microlight 2

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

The Microlight 2 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

Love this tent. I have had it for about four years and no major complaints. I use it mostly for backpacking and has not let me down, wind, or rain has not been an issue. Not being a freestanding tent sometimes finding a spot soft enough has been an issue.

The last trip I took it on was a pretty wet weeklong with three out of the six days rain. On the second rainy night the seam tape came undone but it still stayed water tight. Also have the footprint.

Setting it up is not too bad especially if you have two sets of hands it goes up quick. I have used it in temps from mid 90's to the upper 20's with no complaints. Love the airyness to the all mesh upper.

I am very impressed with quality, performance, and longevity thus far for the money.

Design: three-season non-freestanding
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: pretty simple once you know how it goes

I bought this tent as a lightweight model to take on a backpacking trip through Scotland. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a lightweight tent for use in wet climates. It held up to 20 mph winds and pouring rains off of Loch Lomond without me or any gear inside the tent getting wet.

Definitely spend the extra 10 or 20 dollars to get the footprint, it's worth it and will keep your tent floor dry. Also, LL Bean lists a packed size that is well over what you can get this tent down to with a compression sack, I think I packed it to about 6"x10" (a small REI brand compressions sack).

The only problem I've had at all with this tent is that the zippers can catch a bit, but won't if you pull slowly.. also this is not a tent for people over 6'. At 5' I found the tent spacious, but my companion at just under 6' took up almost the entire tent length.

Design: 3 season, non-freestanding
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: fairly easy to slightly difficult depending on wind speed
Weight: 4 pounds + foot print
Price Paid: $119

Happy, happy! This is a really nice, lightweight tent for the money spent. As usual with LLB, you get excellent quality materials, excellent workmanship, and the best service imaginable, all at a VERY reasonable price. Roomy enough for two but not spacious.

Being an all-net tent, ventilation is excellent, condensation minimal. The two little hoops on the fly do seem to help dissuade any condensation build-up.

The only complaint is that I wish the vestibule was a bit larger, say in the same size range as the Lightstuff 2, which is a very nice size, but if that's the only thing I can find to carp about I'm happy.

Some of the "Big Boys", like TNF, Patagonia, Marmot, SD, etc. could learn a lot from ole LLB, and I sure wish they would!!! Never have I been treated so well - customer service, price, value, quality - Thanks LLB.

Design: 3 season hoop (non-freestanding)
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: very easy
Weight: a tad under 5 pounds
Price Paid: $129

The microlight is an easy-to-set-up, roomy (for a hoop tent), 3 season shelter. The canopy is all mesh for good ventilation. Thus far, with rainfly attached, the microlight is impermeable to the elements. A great price for a lightweight, weatherproof tent.
